Default Set you look back on this year with the best vibe

Not sure I'm describing it right, but there is always a set that means more to me than most each year. From 2014's Lorde to 2015's Kaskade, 2016's Major Lazer and 2017's Moderat...who had that vibe?

I think this year it had to be the Neighbourhood. Something about this band screams Coachella's indie poppy rock that I always thought Coachella was about before I went to festival. Their set I downloaded after seeing and it's been on repeat for the last 2 weeks.

What was your set and mainly WHY!?

Soulwax with Jungle second for me

This is really how I remember each year. I can run around seeing as many sets as possible, but it is really the special ones you hold onto

    2011: Chemical Brothers
    2012: Amon Tobin
    2013: Simian Mobile Disco/Booka Shade
    2014: Darkside
    2015: Jungle
    2016: Underworld
    2017: Moderat

Same for me. Soulwax was a close second cuz it was such a great dance party from start to finish. But Tash Sultana takes the top spot for me due to her exceptional music talent and skills, the beauty of her compositions, and the rapt appreciation of the early evening Mohave crowd.

her show in sd was amazing with respect to the crowd. for me, that matters a lot.

This year it was Jungle. Mainly because it was completely unexpected, I had seen them twice before and didn't plan on staying for more than 2 or 3 songs. But once it got going, I couldn't leave....

Cant say Ive had a set like this every year, but there have been a few that really stand out.

    Ghostland Observatory - 2009
    Cut Copy - 2011
    The Rapture - 2012
    Parov Stelar - 2016
    Moderat - 2017

Im sure I could fill in the gaps, but those are the ones that stand out the most.

YES!!!! Omg. You are almost my twin with these. Ghostland, Cut Copy, Rapture and Moderat are definitely in my all-time Coachella hall of fame. I'm kicking myself for missing Parov now...

This year definitely David Byrne W2. I would put Chromeo and Soulwax up there too this year because of their fantastic crowds. Cherry Glazerr was really special too.

    2017: Moderat, Breakbot
    2016: Grimes
2015: GESAFFELSTEIN OMG. Followed by Caribou, Madeon, Marina & the Diamonds. Amazing year
    2014: Washed Out --> Warpaint. I cried
    2013: Hot Chip mainstage 8pm
    2012: THE RAPTURE. Tie for all-time #1
2011: THE PRESETS (my other all-time #1). Cut Copy was also amazing that year.
2010: Little Boots - fuckin laser harp! I lost my shit
    2009: Ghostland Observatory
2008: First time seeing Cut Copy
2007: My first year, so almost everything made a huge impression on me. Watching the Rapture that year was the first time I EVER danced at a show, it was a big moment for me, haha.

I was just wrecked and exhausted by the time Soulwax and Jamrioquai came around so my experience at those sets wasn't as incredible as I was expecting it to be. I have to say Fleet Foxes this year totally stole the show for me, sitting far back with my wife and just lounging in the grass while they were playing was a really special moment and they are just ace live at this point.

2018: Otoboke Beaver I think is where I had the most fun, lots of contenders, but for me the ultimate Coachella vibe is stumbling upon something amazing that you weren't anticipating and that was Otoboke Beaver. The energy was insane for a relatively small crowd, the Sonora is the perfect atmosphere for that kind of set.

Honorable Mentions: Brockhampton, Moses Sumney, Eminem, Chloe x Halle

2016: Matt & Kim.. just great fun vibes from the balloons in the crowd, crowd pinatas, the MASS amount of crowd surfing (the first time I ever crowd surfed too!) and the raw energy they had, especially Kim getting in the crowd. Heck even the extremely random cover of Party Up by DMX lol

Honorable Mentions: Rancid, Ice Cube, Of Monsters & Men, Lush

2017: Two Door Cinema Club & Joseph tie, I stumbled upon Joseph because I got to the Gobi early to be up close for Tennis (real contender too) but these girls are something magical live.. the way they sing off of each other. I fell in love and got their album as soon as I got home. I came for Tennis as they were my highlight of the whole weekend but once Joseph got going, I didn't want their set to ever end. As far as Two Door Cinema Club goes they were just as great live as recorded and the main stage was really into it, I jammed out so hard and met this really cool girl who jammed just as hard as I did next to me, we sang all of the words together the entire time.

Honorable Mentions: Kendrick Lamar, Tennis, Chicano Batman, Denzel Curry

2009: ghostland observatory - the first nighttime set of my festival journey. Probably my number one set I’ve ever seen as a result.

HM:the presets, Macca, Michael franti, the chemical brothers.

2012: bon iver - wasn’t expecting much as I was just camping out for Radiohead and avoiding the Sahara cheese fest... was truly blown away by the performance and felt extremely connected to the moment.

HM: modeselektor (holy fuck that was fun), Dre & Snoop.

2013: simian mobile disco tied with grizzly bear - The festival always feels extremely hectic at times, but there’s always a set where everything calms down and I fall into the moment/groove. Grizzly bear was that moment for me. I was able to fully enjoy the night after hat set and simian mobile disco blew me away later on that night.

    2014: bonobo - see above
HM: arcade fire, Holy Ghost, QOTSA

2016: Rufus du Sol - my favorite band
HM: zhu, M83, disclosure, Guns n Roses, Anderson Paak

2018: tash sultana - incredible performance. HM: Miguel, soulwax

2009 - Paul McCartney / Okkervil River / The Cure / Public Enemy
2010 - Florence & The Machine / Pavement / Gossip / Hockey / Kate Miller Heidke - (Note - my least fav trio of headliners of all the years I've gone)

2017 - Ezra Furman / Father John Misty / Toots & The Maytals / Preservation Hall Jazz Band (my least fav of all the Coachellas I've attended from a lineup perspective)
2018 - David Byrne / Eminem / Moses Sumney / JMJ / St. Vincent (first half only) / War On Drugs / Kamasi Washington / Otoboke Beaver / and for the sheer spectacle-effort-thought that went into it Beyonce (though I really didn't love the set in the moment)
Radiohead - The Xx - Father John Misty - Bonobo - DJ Shadow - Guided By Voices - Preservation Hall Jazz Band - King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - The Interrupters - Klangstof

Beyonce - Bon Iver - Nicholas Jarr - Tycho - Four Tet - The Avalanches - Banks & Steelz - Car Seat Headrest - Mitski - Floating Points

Could not break the tie now. So happy to witness/be part of these. Two of the greatest of all-time at Coachella. Royksopp brought IT at the Sahara. Seeing New Order at the 2005 poster in a Coachella ad on Spin Magazine was the main reason why I planned and made it to my first Coachella in 2006.

2007: Winner(s) - Klaxons (and next time maybe with Ratatat & Justice)

Paris Hilton was already chillin’ and dancing at the small VIP section on the sides of the stage when Coachella used to be cool. She did not ruin it neither made Klaxons’ set epic for me. Just could not forget it, LOL.

    Edit:
Honorable Mention: Ratatat, Justice (feels like aT this moment, these 2 should be co-winners too)...

    2006: Winner - Daft Punk

Yep, they gave it to themselves. Lol

    All-Time - Daft Punk 2006 vs Royksopp and New Order 2017 W1 vs Klaxons 2007 vs MK W1 & Jon Hopkins W1 2015 vs MCDE W1 & W2 - TOUGH!

Arrrgh, I have been thinking about The Swell Season in 2008. I’ll probably gonna have it later as co-winners with Portishead as well. I am not going to pick one as my all-time winner among my winners.

Edit: Forgot Justice’s really authentic vibing and electrifying first Coachella appearance in 2007. May have later Klaxons, Ratatat and Justice in 2007 as all winners in that category and year.

Edit #2: Franz Ferdinand oozing with swag and vibes in 2006 like no one did before at Coachella Stage and the Polo Fields.

There have been better performances in the 11 years I've gone (though that number is very, very small), but I don't think a more "spiritually" moving show has ever taken place on the grounds than that first Bon Iver appearance... Blood Bank, Wolves Pt 1 & 2, several others... show felt like a religious experience.
Radiohead - The Xx - Father John Misty - Bonobo - DJ Shadow - Guided By Voices - Preservation Hall Jazz Band - King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - The Interrupters - Klangstof

Beyonce - Bon Iver - Nicholas Jarr - Tycho - Four Tet - The Avalanches - Banks & Steelz - Car Seat Headrest - Mitski - Floating Points

100% agree. I’ve seen better sets but this one stands out to me on a personal level. The shipwreck/ghostlike stage setup, the incredible music, Justin Vernon’s raw voice, the attentiveness of the crowd , and the weather all made for a wonderful experience/journey. The band seemed genuinely happy/stoked to be performing and it translated well into their performance

Oh just remember too The Jesús and Mary Chain bringing out Scarlett Johansson in 2007 was the first face melting surprise guest appearance vibe I ever had at Coachella lol. Just proper that The Jesús and Mary Chain were the ones responsible for that goddess apparition at the Coachella Polo Fields. The rest is history. It will be hard to top. Wonder why Arcade Fire failed to bring/force Bowie...
