Thread: Bob Dylan - Why All The Hate?

Default Bob Dylan - Why All The Hate?

This dude has done thousands of shows and I have known so many people who have tried to see him once and haven't heard a good word about a single one.

He still seems quite popular for someone who also seems universally hated.

His voice is so smoky now, he doesn't really sound anything like he did in his classic recordings. When he does play his classics (which he rarely does), it's arranged in a way that barely resembles the original song.

If you expect him to sound like 60's Dylan, you'll be disappointed, and I think that's why people haven't enjoyed him live. That was my problem when I saw him for the first time at the Palladium maybe 8-9 years ago or so. However, when I saw him at weekend 2 of Desert Trip last year, I thought he was great. Great setlist, and his vocals sounded so much better.

he's a brilliant lyricist and fifties American, but some of his songs went on too long. Like 'Tangled up in blue'.

He's a great, iconic talent, but an incredibly unreliable live performer who doesn't give a shit if he delivers a crap show.

Depending on the day, his mumbling can render even his most popular songs unrecognizable. But on other days, he can still be pretty decent, and his bands are usually solid.

I've seen him three times. The first was the GE Smith tour around 1990 and it was quite possibly the worst live show I've ever attended, but a few years later while visiting relatives I caught him a hockey arena in Green Bay and he was excellent. Desert Trip was the middle ranker of the three shows, but definitely tilted more to the positive.
