    Default Hip-Hop 2018

Let's discuss which hip-hop artists, established and upcoming, will be at Coachella next year. Travis Scott, Future, Q, and Gucci were all second line acts with the biggest crowds of the festival. I'm sure Lil Uzi Vert played to a packed Sahara as well. Migos seemed to be omnipresent throughout the weekend too. No doubt GV will book much more (current) hip-hop next year.

    I predict:

    J. Cole (overdue to play, sleeper headliner, maybe opens for Bey)
Childish Gambino (second name on any day)
Young Thug (next year's Travis Scott, played FYF last year)
YG (next year's Q, third album by next year)
    Kevin Gates
    Kodak Black
    21 Savage

new/XXL freshman-material artists: XXXTentacion, Lil Ugly God, Playboy Carti, Madeintyo, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie

There will be a couple Grime artists sprinkled in there perhaps. And I predict board favorites Freddie Gibbs and Madlib will be there also.

And expect a return from Anderson .Paak

Aren't Kevin Gates and XXXTentacion in jail?

Shit, does it have to be "new" hip-hop artists? Just gimme at least one or two older cats like Busta Rhymes, E-40, Twista... fk it, throw em in the Heineken Tent if you have to.

I'm very curious if they risk booking Young Thug given how often he cancels/flakes on shows.

I'd be surprised if Lil Yachty isn't there.

I felt like if there was a year, it would have been this one. Was really surprised he wasn't on there. But then again they booked Future a year after the "obvious" year too.

I love all the names listed in the OP except Kevin Gates.

    Really...REALLY want Eminem though.

Really hope they book none of the artists listed in here thus far because they're all absolutely fucking awful.

After two straight years of being there? I wouldn't say they're a given. Actually I'd say probably unlikely. 3 out of 4 years seems a bit much.

    Alesso did it.

Hm, didn't realize that. 3 of 4 has to been anomaly though I'd suspect.

Oh totally. I mean even back to back years is an anomaly. I just remember being like, "Holy shit, Alesso AGAIN?"

Black Keys and Hot Chip may not have done 3 out of 4, but there was awhile that they were omnipresent. Tame Impala did year on/year off from 2011-2015. So there are some GV darlings who pretty much get invited back every time they have a solid album.

Eh, you could probably remove "solid" from that sentence and it would still apply, lol.

You're right! Hah. And I attended 2 out of 3 of those sets (vs. none of Alesso's) so I can't believe I forgot that one!

Gambino's the only one listed so far that I would really care to see. I'd toss in Kamaiyah and Migos (still surprised they didn't play this year) as well as A Tribe Called Quest (seems natural). Maybe Danny Brown?

Tribe is probably the only old school hip hop we'd get if they play, but I'd be down for someone like Common, The Roots, or a Clipse reunion (I'd guess that's a 2019 thing if it happens).

    UGHHHHHHHHHHH PLEASSEEEEEEEE

I've put that on every fake poster I've ever made. Clipse and Jamiroquai are my two top bucket list #rare acts at this point.

We're at the point where most of the rock bands that broke up have already reunited and played the festival, and indie rock acts don't really break up anymore aside from LCD (which was barely a breakup). The major potential reunions seem to be in other genres - Clipse, N.E.R.D., Fugees, A Tribe Called Quest, etc.

i still get sad thinking about being all excited at the Clipse set in 2009 only to have the sound guy come out and announce they were cancelling.

I literally was typing up a fake lineup and had these three down based on your same reasoning. Given Pharrell's love of the festival, I hope N.E.R.D. is more of a "when" vs "if".

I do think the other avenue for big reunions would be 2000s era emo bands. But that wasn't quite my genre so I'm not sure who's broken up and who would have critical acclaim in terms of reunions, vs. who would just be stuck at the Warped Tour level of bookings.

There was an old poster template floating around the board I saved a while ago and after I get my list done I'm gonna start transferring the names onto it. It's going to suck
