Default Someone Is Selling Coachella User Accounts on the Dark Web

    https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/a...n-the-dark-web

If you're a fan of flower headdresses, watch out.
A data trader claims to be selling over 950,000 user accounts for the website of popular music festival Coachella. The data includes email addresses, usernames and hashed passwords.

"Coachella complete database dump from this month," the vendor, who uses the handle Berkut, writes in their listing on the Tochka dark web marketplace. (Motherboard could not independently verify that the data was sourced this month).

Coachella is held annually in Indio, California. Previous lineups have included Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg, Radiohead, and Kanye West. Beyoncé is in this year's lineup.

The stolen data does not contain payment details, according to a sample of over 10,000 accounts that Berkut provided to Motherboard.

Motherboard verified the data by attempting to create new accounts on Coachella.com with 30 of the provided email addresses—every randomly selected addresses was already linked to a current account on the site. Usernames in the dump also corresponded to real accounts, and two victims in the data confirmed they had signed up to the website.

"Yes I've used Coachella's website in the past when I went to the festival, probably 2010, or 2012," one victim told Motherboard in an email.

"I haven't been on the board for a few months but thanks for the info I'll change my password," another wrote.

According to Berkrut's listing, around 360,000 of the accounts relate to the main Coachella website, and another 590,000 concern the message board. The latter set allegedly includes more information such as the user's IP address. Berkrut is selling the data for $300.

Coachella did not immediately respond to Motherboard's request for comment. We will update this post if we receive a response.

The lesson: Even when doing something as trivial as signing up to a music festival website, we are constantly giving out personal data concerning ourselves. Once you've downloaded a password manager, the software can quickly and easily generate unique logins for any site you might use, meaning that when a random site you used months or years ago suffers a data breach, hackers won't be able to do all that much with the stolen info.

    Another day, another hack.

I changed my password successfully yesterday after seeing this thread. Here's what to do: once you are logged in, go to https://account.coachella.com/my-account. Look on the left side, and you should see your real name and user name. Click on "Profile Settings" underneath. A profile settings dialog box should pop up. Then click on the "Change Password" tab. Follow the instructions, and you should be good to go.

Thanks! I have wondered for a LONG time how to change my password and email address. It worked very well.

Why hasn't Goldenvoice auto-reset all users' passwords by now? Why hasn't Goldenvoice sent an email notifying all account owners to change their password if they use their Coachella password on other sites too? Disappointed at the lack of customer protection, both with the initial data breach and the response following.

yup, a lot of real emails addresses and clues to what those people's passwords might be on other sites.

it also wasn't just board member logins -- it was all coachella accounts. so people could have theoretically changed shipping addresses on tickets and taken advantage of that to steal tickets (though that at least seems a little easier to resolve from GV's end than total identity theft).

Goldenvoice's lack of action (no password reset, no communication with account owners) makes me think that one of three things is true:

    Either:

    1) The entire Goldenvoice tech team is clueless

    Or:

    2) Someone on the business side of things did an impact analysis and decided that the potential damage to the Coachella brand by contacting customers would be significant enough to risk the customer impact of identify theft so as to just keep things as quiet as possible.

    Or:

    3) Goldenvoice is incredibly slow and they're still in the process of doing a root cause analysis so when the finally contact customers they can say exactly what went wrong and tell people with certainty that they've fixed the issue and instituted better data protection standards moving forward. Unfortunately, the longer they wait, the greater the potential customer impact is.

I'm hoping it's #3 as the lesser of evils, but I sort of think #2 is more likely.

Can't it be both #2 and #1? The forum keeps running into the same glitches and while I'm not a tech person I don't understand why it's been such a persistent issue they can't resolve permanently.

every since they transitioned to using coachella accounts to log in to the board has never worked well, not since day one. (god I miss the built in board login.)

speculating wildly: whoever they contracted to set that up messed up the job. cleaning up that mess is more expensive than goldenvoice wansts to spend on it, and/or people they could contract to do it don't even want to touch it. instead they end up trying to find quick fixes for problems instead of resolving them.

there are other feasible explanations too. it comes down to how much time and money people want to spend fixing it, which is likely just not very much.

GV's solution to the Stagecoach forum was to shut it down. It didn't affect ticket sales. As long as Coachella continues to sell out, they have no need to continue the Coachella forum. It served its purpose years ago, but no longer.

We recently discovered that unauthorized third parties illegally gained access to the usernames, first and last names, shipping addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and dates of birth individuals provided to Coachella. We have confirmed that no user passwords were stolen.

Based on our investigation, no financial information was accessed and, there is no indication that customer financial information has been disclosed.

We have taken measures to block further unauthorized access, and reported the matter to the appropriate authorities for further investigation.

We regret any inconvenience this incident may have caused.

If you have any questions, please contact info@coachella.com. Please be aware that you may be targeted by phishing emails sent from people impersonating Coachella personnel. Please remember that Coachella will never solicit personal information or account information from you via email. Please exercise caution if you receive any emails or phone calls that ask for such information, or direct you to web sites where you are asked for personal or financial information. Festival ticketing purchase accounts were not affected by this incident, however festival attendees may want to consider changing any passwords that they have shared with others.
