Default Roger Waters 2008 - Help Me Settle An Argument

I was there with my girlfriend at the time and within a few minutes of Roger Waters taking the stage she started laughing and yelled OMG HE IS LIP SYNCHING. I said no way, you are looking at the greatest singer, songwriter and all around performing artist of our time, he has way too much integrity. Of course he is singing. She said this has gotta be the fakest shit I have ever seen here. She was so vocal about it people around us were taking notice. Some started booing and throwing paper cups and cigarette butts at us while some people were actually agreeing and saying yeah totally. I tried to say no it's real but she just wouldn't let up. It almost ruined the experience for me.

She STILL insists the whole thing was a puppet show while I say the only way it would have been more real was if David Gilmour and Richard Wright were there.

    What say you?

Regardless of whether it was true or not, her behavior sounds totally obnoxious. How far away from the stage were you? Just curious how well she could actually see his real face, or just the jumbotron, or why she would think that. (I was not able to stay late enough to watch him that day, unfortunately... such a bummer)

I seriously doubt he was lip-synching, but it's probably not out of the question that he could've been singing over a vocal track of some sort. I don't really remember much else from it being an amazing performance.

The best performance I've ever seen in my 9 years of going.

I remember Waters really getting into his set, I also remember thinking he was gonna go home old and tired and then would probably warm his bones beside a fire.

He was not lip syncing, but he didn't perform a major part of the vocals. He mostly sang back up because he didn't originally sing most of the songs on Dark Side. He only sang lead on the last 2 songs.

She probably just noticed the fact that there is a slight delay when vocals are projected (audio and video) in a large concert setting... My question is why are you still wito her? She sounds like an idiot to make such a scene.

Your gf sounds like a knob. No, he wasn't lip syncing, but he was only performing backup vocals for a lot of songs because Gilmore sang most of them in the first place. There were probably also some pre-recorded backing vocal tracks which is pretty standard for many large scale performances like that one.

I'd bet Levi 760 is right on ...regarding the delay.

I remember seeing 311 many years ago and they absolutely lip synched the entire show.... total bs!

One thing I've seen is if there is NO variance from the radio/cd track to the live and they sound the same as they do in your car ....pay attention...you may be getting suckered. 99% of all live bands have solos and variances to their song and they don't ever sound exactly as they do in your car.

    Never seen this at coachella

Who gives a crap? It's still one of the greatest spectacles I have ever seen at a festival. The group around me teared up during the violin solos in Comfortably Numb. Those folks were cool. I would have blown a gasket if I was near some tool yelling stupid shit about lip syncing and throwing things. God, how asinine.

This. Of the 8 years I attended the festival (haven't been since 2013) the main stage spectacle and sound in 2008 was probably the most awe inspiring of any year.

Agreed - McCartney is my all time fav Coachella set, but Waters, Prince rank #2 & #3 all-time, and no other year I've attended has come close to delivering such a 1/2 headliner punch...two for the ages shows on consecutive nights. And those Portishead and My Morning Jacket sub-headlining sets that led into each of those shows were amazing as well.

Still my favorite Coachella of the 8 I've attended.

I CARE. How the hell can you headline a festival and not even sing your own songs for the crowd?

Best thing i've seen at coachella was the Roger Waters set. I think i had to grow a new face after, because between the hash and the floating pig, it melted off! He didn't lipsync it was the track and sound. sounds like the girlfriend could have been as out of it as I was

That was an amazing set. Too bad we were so fried, we walked out thinking it was over while they were setting up new props on the stage. Duh

There were some canned lead vocal parts on the Waters Moon/Wall tours in the past decade. It's not really a big secret.

BTW, he was never a great singer. He's actually tone deaf.

I had backstab passes that year. I saw him warm up the mining prior. He was live ...as one already said...she was looking at the monitor and seeing the delay...that and he still sound almost dead on to the cd's.

Kraftwerk-Portishead-Prince was the greatest back-to-back-to-back on one stage in Coachella history. And I don't think it will ever be eclipsed.

Saw Rodger Waters at Desert Trip in Coachella Valley in October and he was definitely lip synching... it was super obvious!
