I suppose I’m dead-center for the Steely Dan demographic – they started and became popular during my college years. Some of their well-known songs form a good part of the soundtrack of my young life back then (mostly because they got such huge radio play, and you heard them a lot whether you wanted to or not). So there’s a pretty hefty nostalgia angle for me, and there’s something special, something wistful, I guess, about pop songs from your youth that’s just different from songs later, whatever their musical quality (unless they’re just downright awful. Which for me would be most all of 70s disco, for instance).

However, Steely Dan’s music was always sliced a little too thin for my taste, with studio production values just too polished to death for me. So I was never a fan, though I didn’t exactly hate them or anything. What’s left then, for me, is a somewhat low-grade nostalgic/youthful soundtrack/wistful feeling for any Steely Dan tunes. Not enough to make me go out of the way to seek them out performing. Plus, I like good new music a lot more than most of the old classic stuff from back when (even the really good stuff) that a majority of my fellow boomers seem to be stuck on. Steely Dan's playing the local casino? Not interested.

But here's Steely Dan at Coachella, of all places, and my wife is fairly interested in catching them (I think she might have even had one or two of their albums in the long ago). I’d much rather do Gorgon City and Caribou, myself, but I suppose we’ll compromise and catch the first half of Steely Dan, forego Gorgon City, then over to Caribou (not missing Caribou). Unless the reports from WE1 say Steely Dan sucked (we’re going WE2). One big advantage of WE2.

Like I said, not a fan, but I don’t get the hate for Reeling in the Years here. How that song differs substantially from, say, Deacon or Rikki or Hey Nineteen, doesn’t compute. They’re all about the same, to me.

I'm planning on a light turnout and groping my way to as close as I can get.

If it's anything like Stone Roses, I'll be close.

Too bad no stream tonight to gauge it.

I think they will have a decent crowd considering the main stage is silent (and Mojave silent for first 25 minutes too) but it won't be super crowded or anything.

And DFH, they are a very solidly reviewed live act, so I wouldn't worry about that. They will bring it, reliably.

Not sure but from the articles I've read, they definitely played Bodhisattva, Kid Charlemagne, Hey Nineteen, Daddy Don't Live In That New York City No More, Reelin' in the Years, & Show Biz Kids.

    No 'Rikki' or Dirty Work.

God damn, Steely Dan was amazing last night. I've been listening to them since I was a little kid, and I never thought I'd see them live. I kinda wish they played "Do It Again" but they sounded incredible even though Donald Fagen looks like he has cerebral palsy when he plays the piano. Also that drummer, holy shit.

I really wanted to like this. The band sounded great but I only knew one song from the first 6 or 7 and had a hard time getting into it. They did start playing stuff I was familiar with after I left, but I was over it.

I talked to my friend that's at W1 on the phone last night, and he said that Steely Dan was his least favorite thing of the day, that they seemed bored/uncomfortable and like they didn't want to be there, and actually said out loud that they're only doing it for the money. Seems like a downer attitude

Pretty sure that's just their form of humor and they were very appreciative of the audience and thanked them at the end.

Billboard: "There were some financial considerations, I'm not gonna lie," he uttered as a semi-joke

Fagen addressed this directly in his RollingStone tour diary:
Donald Fagen is doing a tour diary for Rolling Stone and addressed the rumor that Steely Dan played this year's Coachella festival just for the money.

He writes, "Wrong. This festival sells out every year by featuring a huge variety of bands, including hot new ones, and providing campgrounds for lustful youngsters.

Last year the producers made $78 million. Anyway, who actually goes to these things to hear music? Isn't it more about taking part in a mass communal ritual, smoking dope and watching the submarine races? [Hell] yeah."

Nice work purplecow, I'm glad you found that, I would have been pretty bummed if they actually said that the only reason they're there was for the $$$. Steely Dan is definitely in my top 3 for w2. Still no setlist? Can't wait for this

Biggest disappointment of the weekend for me. They sounded fucking terrible. Made the choice to leave and get a spot for Caribou, which was best decision I've made in years at Coachella.

This thread reminds me of Pavement.... completely opposite opinions on everything. "They sucked out loud..." "They were amazing!" "They looked bored and didn't seem to know how to play their instruments..." "That's their sense of humor!"

For the record, I was not pro-Pavement in that instance, but it was interesting that some people thought highly of that set as well.

Pretty bummed to hear that Steely Dan was a letdown. Guess I'll skip them and see Caribou instead.

Did they seriously sound terrible when that's basically what they're known for caring about? Anyone have anything to say about the w1 show that actually at least sounds credible? Tough to get a read when all people are saying is it was either awesome or the biggest let down.

I was there for a few songs standing near the back and thought they sounded pretty good. "Hey Nineteen" was great until his weird rant in the middle.

Their sound was fine, it's just that they noodled around with 10 minute versions of less catchy songs most people didn't know while waiting for "Peg" "Do It Again" and "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" that never came. People around me were really trying to get into it but you could tell it just wasn't right. I don't know what song it was but when the other singer sang his song (which was quite franky awful) even the old people started leaving.

I didn't grew up listening to Steely Dan and only knew a handful of their "radio friendly" songs so I went in with a very open mind (and high).

They blew my mind! They where so freaking amazing and had a lot of balls To start with a song like that ('it sure of the name), but it kind of set the tone to the show. I was expecting dad-rock and I got hit by jazz fusion, classic rock tunes and amazing guitar solos, back to jazz, big band, into progressive realms, and that monologue with the trumpet was so freaking amazing!

I would definitely see them again. I was in the rail, maybe that made a difference in terms of the sound. It was good.

I saw the set list, so I'm glad to see these last two comments. While a few of the songs they played may be deeper cuts, They are all among my favorites.

Opening with Bodhisattva is exactly the right thing to do.

If people weren't into it just because they were unfamiliar with the music, that's cool. I'm glad that it was otherwise a good sounding show.

I was getting kind of bummed that they would be a let down after all the build up I heaped on myself. I really do hope they find a spot for Deacon Blues next weekend.

How close to the rail can you get if you get there 10-15 minutes before the set starts (wanting to not miss too much of Lykke Li).

This is exactly the problem with them. They didn't play songs that people wanted to hear. So - for a complete music nerd, the set was great. It had all of the things that make them amazing. Complicated rhythms, syncopation, difficult solos, impeccable timing, perfect pitch, etc. If you understand how hard this is, you enjoy it more. But, for the rest of the crowd, it was a let down.

At the time slot that they were playing in, people were feeling pretty good, and everybody wanted to party and let loose. When you hear songs that you know and love, you get into it and dance and sing along, having a great time. It would have been nice if they had played some more of their hits, like Deacon Blues, for the new audience that has never heard them before and will probably never hear them again. After their set, everybody was left wondering what the hell they just heard.
How many headlines can you make out of the 2016 lineup? i.e. "Young monsters moon strangers for pure horror."

Most of the comments im reading in this thread are completely bizarre. And I hate saying this phrase and no one likes hearing it and gets offended if told so, but anyone that didn't enjoy the set or was looking for greatest hits just Did not get it. You don't get it.

The amount of pure talent on that stage was Incredible.

If you are a Steely Dan fan, don't listen to a dude ditching Steely for Caribou. Jesus Christ. Get it together people. steely Dan was awesome.

You need to understand that a band with a million hits can't play them all in an hour. Yeah, I would have loved to hear do it again, but what they gave me satisfied my soul in every way. I have always FUCKING HATED "Reeling in the Years" I hate it. It's a stupid song. Stupid radio hit....and guess what? They made me love that song sooo much after seeing it live. A new found appreciation for that song. These guys are masters of their craft and know what they are doing. So shut the fuck up and enjoy the show....or watch caribou, you fucking dinks
Superfan will be in front of the Fonda masturbating furiously to a photo of him taking a photo of a band. Set is from 8:05 to approximately 8:05:15. Guest list only.
