Came in earlier this year (this will come up later) than last year trying to catch Goat. Bus took 3 rounds to get all the people in line so we got in late and no Goat.
After getting locker, liquor and doing a lap, we ended up at Dum Dum Girls.
Not super impressed. Better that the weekend 1 video stream. My wife wanted to see them. Even she wasn't into it after 3 songs.
She said "They didnt even change outfits" LOL she's cute. So music wise, meh.
Walked through Austra on our way to the Rose Garden to grab a drink.
First, LOVED the new Gobi. Great change.
It was Austra's last song, we saw them before opening for the XX in Miami, we liked them there.
Not sure if it was the band or the sound but holy shit the last song was bad. She has a unique voice and it can go bird call on you but fuck it sounded like someone was murdering a box of kittens.
Then a quick walk through the Sahara. DJ Falcon.
Was glad I got to see him, didnt think it would happen and possibly the only Sahara set I was interested in catching.
Caught a few tracks, it was nice to hear someone mix in that tent. Non drop oriented, danceable music, 2 or 3 solid mixes, a rework of some classic booty hip hop that was ass shaking good. Would have loved to hear it at a different time of day. He bobbled a mix, I took it as my cue to go grab drinks.
The Rose Garden was reconfigured. They took out the seating on the left side of the barn, moved the bathrooms to the lot outside the rose garden. Took over the right side with that dinner upgrade (??) Upgraded the look of the food vendors. My favorite drinks are in here, the interesting juice cocktails with the cool garnishes (yeah I know). The food was great. Church Key was the name I think. Cheese burger and brussle sprout Caesar salad were both delish.
Fished up and over to Title Fight. Fuck I loved these guys. LOVED. Reminded me of Sunny Day Real Estate who is one of, if not my overall favorite band. Sick energy, really brought me back, caught a few songs and wish I could have stayed for the whole set. Cant wit to buy some music and listen to them more.
Then Jagwar Ma. GREAT VIBE. Best crowd of the day. Dancing, vibing, head bobbing, if I could have walked around with this crowd all day I would have been thrilled. Bumped into folks from home. Music was TOP NOTCH. I believe someone said they would benefit from a drummer and I tent to agree, but even without they are damn near perfect. Jam, Electronic, Housy, fun vocals. Reminds me of dubtribe with guitars. Felt like I was back in the Alachua forest with Sunshine and Moonbeam doing Planet Earth. Could have been my set of the day.
Then we went to the other VIP. No real change. I'm going to bitch because the samsung tent requires I have a samsung phone.... reallly?. Whatever, stupid marketing.
Caught a bit of Group Love while drinking some beer. Fuck that girl cant sing, maybe thats the point. Overall I recalled some of their songs from the radio. They were bubblegummy and not bad for sitting on a lawn and grabbing a beer.
Off to the Yuma. LOVE the rework. Love that you can enter once and then break away to go eat and piss and then get back at it. Damian Lazarus, what a sick DJ. They should take all the young kids and make them stay in that tent through his set. Track selection, mixing, programming, fucking top notch. Best 30 minutes of DJ experience of our day. Either the last track he payed before I dipped is amazing or he tone mixed the best mix I have ever heard EVER. The synths were rhythmic and groovy and the beat came in hard on the half step of the synth rhythm. Record or mix, I haven't had a track make me shake my ass that hard in a while.
Then it was off to Haim. (Prepares for the beating). Those girls should make loot off a couple of radio play albums and then just make whatever music they like with the cash. I'm sorry, say what you want, they can plan. Their pop songs really grate on me (though I dont turn them off when they come on XM) but they can play their instruments and they can sing without a back track. They cant harmonize perfectly (like the studio work) but this time they didnt try (as they did last weekend) to pull of a studio sound. They just sang it clean. The crowd here was great. Everyone was dancing or vibing or smiling. I hope these girls get to make a bluesy album, cause they clearly love that sound and they can play that sound well. I like the stuff of theirs I dont know 10x better than the stuff I do and all that stuff just sounds rocky and bluesy.
The DJ Letdown of the day. The break my heart moment. Gareth Emery. I remember Gareth early on. 2002 - 2003 and for the next few years after. Solid production, good vibey progressive and solid trance. Fuck me, guess people have to pay the bills, shit fucking electro house and the worst kind, someone please kidnap and deprogram this guy from whatever shit music cult he is in. Just a fucking shit set of shit music. Only caught moments because it made me so grumpy to think of what was. But drinks in the rose garden are always good so i took one for the team
Then it was off to Bastile for the wife. Holy packed tent batman. Was Paris Hilton giving hand jobs in there or what?
So packed, and since the shit is somewhat off the penny for this band with the wife we moved on.
To my set of the day. Kate Nash. I've been a big fan since early on. I just dig this chick. Like a thinking mans Lilly Allen.
I love the cheeky lyrics, and the energy, if all pop music was like this I'd love pop music. Great crowd, mostly girls with their boyfriends who gave me quirky smiles as I belted out lyrics and jumped up and down. If liking her is wrong I dont want to be right. Those girls can play, they can sing, no bullshit back track. I hope Kate keeps making good music, doing shit her own way. Made my day for real.
Then it was Broken Bells. This one we were doing the whole set. Wifes favorite band and I dig them. So we jumped in after Neko Case. (just for a second, lets say that talent wise I think Neko and her band have to be one of the best acts at the festival) No bullshit, no visuals, no tricks, just strait music done well. I would love to catch her in a non festival environment) ---- Broken Bells, got stuck next two late 40's early 50's dads who decided now, 10 rows back, as soon as the set started would be a great time to discuss their kids musical theater accomplishments. So I decided to speak up and make sure everyone around could enjoy the show. I said "love you guys are catching up and all, but its kind of like you are talking in the middle of the movie" The bald dad who has been doing testosterone therapy says "deal with it" I pull down my bandana, look at him in the eye, bow up and say "really". He backs down, we go on enjoying ourselves and they go grab a beer and finish up their viagra commercial.
Music wise, wife was thrilled, set of her day. She has been wearing out both albums all morning reliving her moment. I like the radio songs. I dont know the lyrics of the other tracks and to me all the tracks I didnt know sounded the same. It confused me that some of the synth parts are not being player by anyone on stage. I dug watching Danger Mouse hit the drums and the guitar and the keyboard, guy is sick talented. The band works for me, great headphone music, but live didnt bring anything to me specifically. I could have closed my eyes and just been listening to it on my home system. No live moments that made it unique to me. So music wise great, but experience wise, meh.
So, I'm older and a bit on the heavy side with flat feet, like flinstones flat. So after a few hours I have to take a break. So we headed to the VIP, which by now was a complete fucking shit show. The entire polo fields feel like they doubled attendance during the time broken bells was on VIP was no exception. We grabbed some grub, heard a little bit of Chromeo and missed Bonobo. Probably my let down of the day.
After my feet were up for it we went to catch the end of Woodkid (which I posted elsewhere) and wait for Flume (which I posted elsewhere).
After Flume, I hit a wall. Went and did a quick lap through the Heineken House (which I am one of 12 people that actually like this new version better)
The craft beer tent (holy shit, how am I supposed to not spend all day here) and the Do Lab ( VAST VAST IMPROVEMENT )
After that we dipped. I know, I'm a pussy but if I didnt rest up I would be worthless today. I'm bummed that we missed the Knife, Caravan Palace and Outkast but it was either that or miss a lot of today. Heard good things and I think I now either have to train for a month before hitting coachella or choose which 8 hours I want to be there, cause 1pm - 12am aint doable for me anymore (**resolves that he is old)
