Okay so after the reviews of weekend 1 a lot of boardies and artists are clearly frustrated with the demographic shift in this years festival. I had a great time this year and didn't really mind what other people were doing, but I can see where people are coming from. No way in hell should arcade fire not of pulled one of the biggest crowd this year nor should there be paltry attendance for queens, muse, beck, neko case, afghan whigs etc.
So what is the solution here to diversify the crowds in such a way that these sort of artists can get their fans to the fest? It's not like they're all that irrelevant, as muse queens beck and all these artists do well at other fests around the world. I think it's more an issue of fans of these artists have no clue whose on the lineup and would like to see said lineup before they commit to anything. So perhaps much of the problem is in the presale? That way the people who are buying tickets to the event are buying them not only for the experience, but largely for the lineup itself. However, presale is a great business decision and it would almost be foolish to leave that guaranteed money on the table. So I will post some options of what we can do going forward to ensure the integrity of the fest isn't lost in the long run.
