since you said "greatest" and not "favorite" there is really only one correct answer. had you said favorite, I would have voted for Futurama.

Yeah greatest is Simpsons without a rival. Go watch the old ones , not the watered down new stuff and you'll be shocked how much the newer shows just ripped from it.

So instead I voted for the Simpsons like a sensible person.

I went with the current best animated sitcom. While The Simpsons, South Park and Family Guy all suck now, American Dad continues to be fucking hilarious.

But I would have included both Roadrunner and Rocky & Bullwinkle on my list, though I guess they weren't sitcoms. They are still hilarious.

The writing on the Simpsons during seasons three through eight was some of the finest writing featured on any television program, ever. Give or take your feelings about Seinfeld, it was the best comedy television program of the 1990s. Of all these programs, the Simpsons is the only one that could seriously contend for a place among the greatest sitcoms ever.

South Park, which among the remaining choices comes closest to greatness, suffers in comparison for two reasons. First, its heavy debt to the influence of the Simpsons itself, and second, its over-reliance on specific pop culture and political events that have lost importance and humor as the years have passed.

I can understand why The Simpsons is winning this poll running away, but I honestly feel like the show stopped being funny in the mid-to-late 90's. There have been scattered episodes that are littered with humor throughout, but overall I think it's pretty dull nowadays.

I chose South Park. I remember when South Park first came out and I was worried that it was a pointless show littered with toilet humor in the same realm as shows like Beavis and Butthead and Ren & Stimpy. It's a lot of cheap humor, but there is always a point or a moral.

I've also appreciated the character development of the four main boys and their ability to tie in so many other characters outside of the four main ones the show was originally designed around. If you have watched that show over the years, then you know plenty about Randy Marsh, Mr. Mackey, Butters, Butters' parents, Tweek, Craig, Wendy, Mr / Mrs / Mr Garrison, Token, Kyle's Mom and Dan, Kenny's parents.

The show can be fucking stupid, but sometimes that's why it makes me laugh. (i.e., Randy's secret society of men who dress like Easter Bunnies and call themselves "The Hare Club For Men" and they all worship a bunny named "Peter Rabbit".) . Cartman is still my favorite cartoon character ever.

I get it but that's a very tall way of saying it.South Park has already acknowlege Simpson being something great or influential yet I feel like the Simpson are frozen in with character development. As with South Park they have at least had the boys go to the next grade.

Also I barely have watch the Simpsons now days compared to my holy shit I want to see the newest episode of South Park.

I interpreted the question to be asking "greatest ever" as opposed to "greatest right now". Zack.

In spite of not being worth watching since the 90's, The Simpsons could keep making crappy new episodes for another 50 seasons and it would still never dilute the greatness of seasons 3-8, and I like throwing seasons 2 and 9 in there as well.
