Starlito's Black Sheep Don't Grin is Memphis rap at its finest and a late contender for one of my favorite rap records of the year. The production is deep, dark, soulful. Starlito is a rapper who utilizes his voice in such an interesting way and delivers each syllable with thoughtful precision. This dude has been slept on for a while, but hopefully this is the album that gives him a little more of the shine that I think he deserves.

They most certainly do. I caught them opening for Sharon Jones in New York years ago and they were better than she was, which is saying something.

Yeah dig the Budos Band - I have never heard of them before. Seems like they would be devastating live

I really think that, collectively, Traumprinz's two EPs would be my "album" of the year. More specifically, All The Things is probably my favorite thing I've heard all year. Giegling has put out a lot of great releases, but this trumps the rest. I'm sure anyone into electronic/house has already heard it, but if not it's truly worth tracking down.

You should also check out DJ Metatron ‎– U'll Be The King Of The Stars EP as well. It is one of Traumprinz's alias which has more trance tech flavor for a lack of a better description

    That's saying a lot!

On a totally unrelated topic, incredibly late to the conversation, but completely surprised by how much I liked LDR's Ultraviolence once I finally gave it a listen. Expected something more mainstream poppy and generic...not the well-produced Mazzy Star/Twin Peak-ish moodfest that it is.

So I never listened to Pom Pom when it came out because of how much of an asshole Ariel Pink can be. I liked his earlier stuff but not enough for me to justify listening to that guy. I was content with never hearing it until my friend (whom I share the most musical tastes with) insisted I check it out. I'm honestly so glad I did, this album is amazing. I remember quite a few people in here were saying how addicting of a listen "Black Ballerina" is, you guys are right. I've probably listened to that song 100 times this past week. The record does kinda drag on a little in the middle but Plastic Raincoats In The Pig Parade ---> One Summer Night and Sexual Athletics ---> Picture Me Gone are such a great stretch of songs it doesn't even matter.

    5/1 Sleater-Kinney @ The Palladium
5/8 Stephin Merritt @ The Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever Cemetary
5/30 Neutral Milk Hotel @ Pappy & Harriets
6/4 The Mountain Goats @ Pappy & Harriets
7/15 Shellac @ The Regent Theater DTLA
