Lollapalooza’s 2014 lineup is a fascinating case study for music festivals in 2014. Long gone is Perry Farrell’s initial, grunge-fueled creation of the mid-90s, where Body Count inspired mosh pits and Pavement was pelted with mud balls. Now, yuppies can watch Skrillex play from the comfort of their cabanas and ambulances sit outside Perry’s, waiting for the inevitable overdose. Back in 1996, fans were critical of Lollapalooza’s booking of mainstream rock band Metallica. In 2014, Kings of Leon are playing.

Since taking up permanent residence in Chicago’s Grant Park nine years ago, Lollapalooza has embraced the idea of being America’s biggest and most corporate music festival. This year’s lineup is a reflection of instant sellouts, the rising popularity of EDM, the continued demise of rock ‘n’ roll, and the vastly barren landscape of acts still considered a unique “get”. There’s no money in booking Sleater-Kinney or The Replacements; however, the kids will come see Calvin Harris and Krewella.

Lollapalooza’s 2014 lineup is not bad, it’s just not for you. (Though, considering it’s completely sold out, maybe it is.) And more likely than not, that’ll continue to be the case for the years to come, as the festival veers more toward the path of Ultra Music Festival than Coachella. There’s still a lot to appreciate about this year’s lineup, you just have to dig a little deeper, work a little harder. But, after all, isn’t that what being a diehard is all about?

Browski, he's headlining the fucking festival. In other words: he'll be illustrating his technical rapping abilities live, in fucking person, playing tracks from his entire catalog. He is nothing short of phenomenal live and he's worth the price of admission alone.

Eminem is a fucking dumpster fire live. He lip syncs (sorry - uses a "backing track") and is generally uninspiring and terrible. In terms of rap artists big enough to headline a major festival, he's easily the worst live performer out of the group.

And did you really not understand my critcism of Eminem? he's a technically skilled rapper who seemingly lost the ability to make engaging songs years ago. Unless you find 40 year old men rapping in cartoon voices and sticking with a tired "I'm so edgy" schtick better suited to a teenager somehow fulfilling, in which case I guess he's still pretty awesome. Eminem hasn't made much music which rises above the level of "okay" since about 2002.

Nobody gives a fuck that they played a show the day before, in some other city, at some sold out festival, that they weren't even at. Outkast is a brilliant booking every fucking day of the week - second to none.

I guess you and I have a different definition of what constitutes a "brilliant" booking. I see the word "brilliant" and I think innovative or unique or daring, whereas you use "brilliant" to describe the obvious booking of a great act that will be at pretty much every other festival on the planet.

Listen, you also have to realize a lot of the great bands from the 90s are older now and some not around anymore. You only have so many choices as time goes on to choose from. How many bands are out there like the Cure still together touring around the clock? Maybe a few classic rockers like Rush can still do it...but shit, you can't find a lot that would then FIT the lolla theme.

Eventually you have to hand over the reigns to these bands like arcade fire, killers, kol, etc et by default. Unfortunately, the product and musicianship isn't the same. You guys should search the other festival forum because there are a lot of other better festivals to attend anyways around the globe.

In 2010 Vampire Weekend had what one album and was billed 4th. That's not any different than HAIM being billed 9th on their day...
