Muse hinted at playing a festival in 2014 in California in a interview. There are technically zero rumors about NIN playing, just a big gap and their tour and a promise to come back to the US at some point.
Man, you guys like arguing about shit that's not going to happen quite a bit.

They have around 10-15 singles alone that charted well according to wiki sources. They could just play a history of singles like Soundgarden did at Lolla, or Dre/Snoopat Coachella and be well received. Guest appearances are probable as well, Sleepy Brown possibly making an appearance.
If we are going by years since a last album, it has been a long 13 years since Stankonia, 10 since Speakerboxx/The Love Below, and 7 since the less well received Idlewild. (5.7 million US for Boxx vs. 1 million sales US for Idle) Either way, they reached a level of popularity in the mid 90's to early 2000s that few hip hop groups could match or exceed.
I'm sure I'll be attacked for even posting a thoughtful comment. Please, insult my intelligence again, it's so endearing.
2/21 - Skinny Puppy
5/23-25 - Summer Camp
7/18-20 - Pitchfork Music Festival
8/1-3 - Lollapalooza
Did the "NIN was book right after HTDA played Coachella" rumour come from a reliable source?
Trent said he will play the US in 2014, yet it's either this or late summer. In Early 2013 Adrian Belew mentioned that NIN had already roughly booked 18 months of dates.
NIN have very expensive production bills, so it seems odd they have month off.
I'll say it again: NIN cruise. That would be perfect.
This is probably one of the better points. They were also billed 4th, above Phoenix at Lolla this year, but below the Killers, Cure and Mumford. Don't ask me why the Killers still command that high a spot. We won't even talk about Mumford. I can see NIN billed with Muse, as the two audiences are somewhat intertwined, but playing an 11-something to 1AM set doesn't seem likely for a band as big as Nine Inch Nails. They aren't a cheap band and have a much larger US following than Blur and the Stone Roses, so starting them near midnight would be a bit of a waste for GV. I'd not oppose it though, as it would be pretty cool to see a late night NIN set.

Muse sold 4 times as many tickets in the LA market compared to NIN in 2013.
In 2010 they had Muse at 9:35-11:05 and Tiesto at 11:40-1:00.

AFAIK, excluding EDM closers, the longest a "rock" subheadliner got playing before another rock act was MBV getting 75 minutes before Cure.
... but how would you rate NIN vs. RATM or Muse vs. RATM? need record sales, box office reports, your educated projection on how RATM fares with current audiences, if this is relevant to a potential Muse-NIN co-headliner spot at Coachella and other information and statistics you deem necessary to carry on this conversation for another three or four more pages. I mean, we do have page counts to answer to.
If the argument is "they have one hit but the rest of their catalogue is awesome" than nobody should be bitching about the Stone Roses or Blur headlining. For that matter, for next year, noone should complain if the headliners turned out to be Faith No More, Gary Numan, and The Cars (well, they had more than one hit, but really only one or two that people remember).
The new show element for The Knife will be Eddie Murphy appearing as Richard Simmons.
Just wait until you see what they do with spirit fingers.
I think the average attendee would start singing Gary Numas "Cars" if you asked them for a melody for a song by The Cars.
Theklein is going to be next generations Slow Motion Apocalypse.
Outkast are like a woman going through menopause. They can't produce anymore but need to build the hype somehow through a "reunion" to still be loved.
Is that what you wanted me to say.
