I have always defended the Grammys as a necessary institution that rewards artists who contributed great work to the music community but this year's nominations definitely have me discouraged. I think the closer the 20 and 30 somethings generations get into the foothold of the institution we could see some progress in acknowledging indie artists and bands that aren't major label fodder. I mean how does Beach House, Grizzly Bear, Hot Chip, etc miss out on even a nod when they sell out shows and play highly billed sets at festivals? It's not as if they aren't popular or known and they all put out critically lauded and fan appreciated albums this year. I just don't get it.
This is the same organization that could call Nirvana a best new artist contender in 1991, and who gave grammies to fuckin' Hootie and the Blowfish. They don't stand for anything and make very little sense.
