Default Tell Us About 2016 Releases

Now that it's actually 2016 and there's suddenly great new music everywhere, let's discuss 2016 albums and other new music.

The new Bowie is phenomenal. I also love this bonkers new Yeasayer song and this lovely new Chairlift song:

I'm not completely sold on the new Bowie yet, but it is a lot better than anything he's done in decades. Lazarus is a killer song

The Bowie album is really good on first listen. It ended up being way less avant-garde than I thought it might be based on "Blackstar", but that's fine. The drummer is a stud. Really great playing all around, and pretty interesting songs. Nice to see Bowie continues to challenge himself and his audience.

The new Quilt album Plaza is so lovely. Their jams are tighter, more developed and there's a lot more vibrancy and shimmer.

Kendrick Lamar preformed a new song on Jimmy Fallon. It's pretty goddamn incredible.

I am so excited for whatever new music he puts out, jesus christ. I love the direction he's going.

Meanwhile, I'm counting down the next seven days until Anderson .Paak's new album Malibu comes out.

Randy Randall of No Age has a new project called RAT FIST. The vocals are a bit too growly for my liking but this is definitely something some of you will really dig: http://www.ratfistband.com/music/

It's stunning that Bowie released his own eulogy two days before he died and that so many of us missed it. "Lazarus" and "Dollar Days" in particular are just devastating. A great album on its own merits, and one that will only grow in esteem because of the finality with which it was written, recorded, and released.

Really looking forward to the new Explosions in the Sky after hearing the new single

It has a jitteriness that breathes in some new life into a sound that had gotten a tad stale. Album out on 4/1.

What a class act, going out on a weird, elegiac high note.

Black star is an amazing album. An artist giving it all he has for one last hoorah. It'll be hard to beat that this year.

Yes. Love it. Hope to see them live this year.

I need to catch up on everything else. Especially Bowie.

I'm selfishly hoping this sets them up for a set at OSL.

    I wouldn't consider that selfish.

    Anyway, new Courtney Barnett:

Big Ups released "National Parks", a single from their new album due out March 4. The new song really reminds me of Slint, but still has some of the explosiveness of Eighteen Hours of Static.

This is great. Incredibly stoked for the full length. Thanks for the post. Now to go listen to more of them.

Ty Segall's Emotional Mugger is now streaming on NPR first listen.

Edit* I'm on my second listen now, this is a really weird album but I think I like it. It's crazy how different it is from Manipulator.

New Besnard Lakes album A Coliseum Complex Museum is very good, and immediately I like it a lot better than their last full length. it's big and driving with a nice backbeat and huge riffs, but still sounds very much like Besnard Lakes.

Also, the new Diiv album has 3 really amazing songs that I am going to listen to a lot, but the rest of the album all sounds super samey/borderline boring, which is a shame

I gave it a listen this morning, and you're right about the shift in sound--it's a lot heavier, almost like he took a bit of inspiration from that last FUZZ album. The last song I enjoyed quite a bit, although it kind of lost my attention in the middle.

I hate to Spooks up the thread with things that haven't been released, but that looks like the general approach we're taking so far, and this one is closing in on release.

If you like that Kraut-y sound, and/or if you dig Stereolab, Tim Gane's got a new project called Cavern of Anti-Matter that is releasing an album any time now. They just put out the third pre-release track, and the combination of the three songs they've released thus far suggests they have a NEU!-type behemoth on their hands of droning and humming rhythmic guitar pulse. I cannot fucking wait for this thing after hearing all three pre-released tracks.

I am very much enjoying Jesu/Sun Kil Moon. The music is mostly all jesu, with Mark Kozelak doing vocals. He's mostly just rambling over this great music bed, but when he actually sings, it's very interesting.

Also, the new Shearwater album is pretty amazing. The beginning has a lot of electronic elements, which i wasn't expecting, and then it pretty much turns into a huge rock record. It's really great.

Its been talked about in his own thread but the new Anderson Paak album Malibu is pretty awesome. It really reminds me of kendrick if he became an R&B singer. Its super jazzy and really just hits a chord with me, I highly recommend checking it out.

The new Savages isn't very good. It has all the stylistic hallmarks for the genre (and there are some interesting sounds on the record), but it feels pretty shapeless. I enjoyed the first album as a blast of energy and thought they were a cool live act, but the songs always felt kinda weak and I think this album proves that writing good songs isn't their deal. They have an awesome look and overall aesthetic, but I don't think that's enough to keep me on board anymore. It worked for one album but I don't think it does here.
