RIP thanks for the great music.
so terrible... RIP
what a waste
I've never been so sad about a celebrity's death. Without E6 and OTC in particular I don't know if I would ever get into music the way I did. I saw OTC at FYF last year and it was awesome despite sound issues. I was probably the only person who would have rather seen OTC play an aftershow instead of DFA1979. Been looking forward to a new album and proper tour (free of sound flubs) for almost a year. I was so excited when OTC posted a couple days ago that they were heading into the studio. I'm sad that I'll never get to see Bill play again, or hear him harmonize on new tunes. But mostly I'm sad that a great artist and a great guy died so young.

However I am also really glad that he got to patch things up with Will and get back to doing what he loved before it was too late.

I take (small, pitiful) solace in the fact that, at least I got to see OTC twice and Sunshine Fix once, and they did Green Typewriters.
OTC were on the short list for my favorite musical acts of all time. They had a profound affect on my music obsession, and were the first band I discovered directly through this message board. Back in 2005, PotVsKtl posted his first non-vitriolic post, expressing excitement about their reunion shows that they had booked. Amazed that he listened to things, I figured I had to check them out, and I've been in love ever since.
While I've always preferred Will's songwriting, Bill seemed like the more stable member, and the glue that kept them together while they worked.
I knew him pretty well from my time living in Athens.
Nicest guy you will ever meet.
Devastating loss. And that is not even touching on his musical impact.
Wow, i'm sadden by this news. Dusk at Cubist Castle had a big impact on me, and influenced many things I listened to afterwards. R.I.P.

He was, truly, the first musician I loved who I met. I had no clue what OTC looked like when I went to Arthurfest, and I went to the OTC booth to buy a CD. I started talking to the dude with long red hair and mutton chops about how much I loved everything I downloaded and he just laughed and said he was grateful I liked the music.
O man...
A group of boardies were just discussing OTC coming back around outside the Dirty Projectors the other night.
A great thanks to bmack and the others that mentioned OTC and Doss' genius in the FYF fest thread last year and got me to go through and listen to more then the one song I had on an elephant 6 sampler. Really enjoyed that set in the shade of the trees and the metro going by...
Jesus. I also learned of OTC through that thread last year and loved their performance at FYF. I caught about 20 minutes of their set at Primavera just a little over a month ago too. And he was so young!

I had heard OTC's name mentioned for several years, but never really sat down and listened to them until before FYF last year. Since then, I've been completely obsessed, and have listened to them constantly. RIP.
I know it's lame to even ask so soon, but does Bill's passing signal the end of the band? Or is there a chance they may still record/tour?
5/22 - The Cure - Hollywood Bowl
5/31 - Brian Jonestown Massacre - Teragram (?)
6/07 - Chelsea Wolfe - Teragram (?)
6/14 - Silver Apples - Troubadour

God damnit.
Olivia Tremor Control has pretty much always been the collaboration between Will Cullen Hart and Bill Doss. Will made a few albums with the rest of the OTC collaborators and they were called Circulatory System. They're brilliant records, but he's a more experimental pop songwriter, and Bill's more straightforward tendencies are sometimes missing.
OTC is likely done.
Listening to OTC last night helped. It's hard to feel sad when I put on any of their music. Moreso I felt grateful, because these songs have stayed with me and given me a reason to smile for a decade. Thanks, Bill.

The Olivia Tremor Control were the first "out there" band I ever listened to. It was mind-blowing finding music that could be so catchy and pleasant, but still challenging the conventional sounds of pop music. The recent Holiday Surprise tour revived my love for this band and they've been an essential part of the soundtrack to the past year of my life.
RIP
Right, but a lot of the way that this is being discussed by the band's camp (and the way they phrased donating to this specific cause) really makes me think that he took his own life — which makes me super, super, super, super bummed out. I am not sure if it's tacky of not to discuss a cause of death, but I do think if this really is the case...it's definitely something to think about.
