Oh, and bmack and Soul Discharge seem to have primarily recommended Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements, Emperor Tomato Ketchup and to a lesser extent Mars Audiac Quintet. And those three are likely their best, but I absolutely love Peng! and what I've heard from both Margerine Eclipse and Dots and Loops. Just a great, great band overall.

Margerine Eclipse was the first one I heard so it holds a special place, and I love Peng. Not familiar with Dots and Loops though.

I googled "best Stereolab album" a few weeks ago and came across a blog where someone boldly stated this in regards to Dots and Loops:

It's front to back flawless. It’s Stereolab’s best work and one of my favourite albums of all time. Screw Merriweather Post Pavillion, I personally think this is the best blending of experimental and pop that there has ever been. The two seamlessly coexist in a world of jazzy lounge-type keyboards, fucked up time signatures and vocals that jump between French to English from song to song. Every time I listen to this record I pick up something new, even if it’s a quiet sound effect or a backing instrument. Either way, I love it.
I haven't listened to the whole thing yet, and the guy could very well be way off base, but it piqued my interest nonetheless.

Grade: A+
"Long Long Long" is a George Harrison song.

Stereolab's second singles/rarities collection Refried Ectoplasm is pretty damn essential too. It does have "French Disko" after all.

    Ooo yeah, French Disko.

Chris, that review sounds like it could be applied to pretty much any Stereolab album from Mars Audiac Quintet onward. Proof of their consistency definitely.

Bryan and I talked about this a bit at the Dodgers game a few months ago, but Dots and Loops is my absolute favorite Stereolab album.

I've had these little stints the past day or two of listening to Stereolab on shuffle on Spotify. Remarkable, remarkable band.

So this thread has been quiet for a quite a bit and I thought I would give it a bump especially for people who have not had a chance to look at the best thread on this board. Also does anyone have the extensive knowledge to do a complete mike patton review. I have only listened to tomahawk, and a handful of mr.bungle, but I think his extensive catalog would be awesome to have in this.

getbetter would probably be the best for that job. Writing that is going to be a fairly massive undertaking.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds and The Replacements. Two bands I really want to get into but have no idea where to start. The only Nick Cave album I have listened to is Let Love In and I have never listened to The Replacements. Help.

I just read the Tom/Yablo Springsteen reviews and am incredibly frustrated that Yablo only actually wrote insight for three of the albums. Hey Greg, it's six years later: finish what you started!

And also, how wrong was he about Thunder Road?

    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

So, is that why Yablo hates Tom?

Also, nice job compiling the list, Bryan.

I take no credit for that. The list has been running since about the 15th page or something. I think John started it initially, it's just been a collaborative work after that.

And I'd like to see this thread revived, and I have a proposition:

Most of the big artists were reviewed 5+ years ago. I would love to see people (new people, not the original reviewers) take on some of the artists reviewed in here and give their own views. Even if the grades occasionally agree, the views are going to differ, and it'd make for interesting reading. C'mon kids, give me a reason to want to listen to Pixies again.

Give me a few weeks (just need to digest a couple more albums) and I could take on Smog/Bill Callahan. Not too confident in my writing skills, but hey whatever.
