Fantastic. Just fantastic.
Fantastic. Just fantastic.
man I haven't listened to Moonshake in years. Eva Luna is a pretty wild album.
great opener for the album:
Cold Sun - Dark Shadows
This album's really good. A bit typical late '60s psych rock, but some of the songs go to some pretty wild places. Check it out.
Haymarket Square - Magic Lantern
Another cool '60s psychedelic record. This one is much more groovy than the Cold Sun album...it sounds like it could be played in one of those dance scenes in Austin Powers, haha. Good stuff.
The Savage Resurrection - The Savage Resurrection
Man. This album could have been so great, but alas the first 4 tracks make promises that the rest of the record can't keep. Still a worthwhile listen if not for Side A alone, but it pains me to think of what could have happened to this band/album had they kept their foot on the gas. That's how good those first 4 songs are.
I really like that Haymarket Square album, Chris.
Also, I finally gave Brian Jonestown Massacre's latest record a spin and it's really good. I think it's the best album they've put out in a long time.
EDIT* This track kills:
"Ha. Ha! You call that psychedelic?" - Skip Spence, if he were alive today, listening to Temples.
^ I'm digging that. Also, everyone should check out Wreaths' 2014 release. Really good stuff.
I have been noticing that Spotify has filled in lots of world music holes, so today I checked, and there are now tons of releases from Erkin Koray and Baris Manco, two of Turkey's biggest psychedelic artists, up on there. 2023 by Manco is one hell of a record.
International psych/funk has been a HUGE musical wormhole for me over the last couple of years, and one that I'm fine completely with being swallowed whole by hahaha. I give a lot of credit to the "compile-ists" who travel to these locations, make local connections, and dig through mounds of dusty old vinyl to find these gems.
Anyways, I don't use Spotify but there are a series of region-based "Rare Groove Nuggets" collages on ? which have led me to some truly fantastic discoveries; I also try to keep up with what labels like Now-Again, Strut, Soul Jazz, Light in the Attic, Secret Stash, etc. are releasing as they seem to always put out some quality compilations and re-issues.
What made me want to listen to those guys was jumping into this Mauritanian psych record that just came out by a lady named Noura Mint Semyali. Her parents are serious musicians from the area (her dad wrote Mauritania's national anthem) and family is the predominant way that musicians are trained in that part of Africa, so she's a superstar. The album, Tzenni, is really good, a wicked blend of American psych, African string instruments and vocals that definitely reflect the Tuareg background of Mauritania.
That 2023 album is wonderful. Keep going, guys! I haven't heard of any of this stuff.
Cosmonaut. Bought a CD a few days ago. Made a fan out of me, show is on Friday, can't wait.

So while at Austin Psych Fest this year, a friend was telling me about Liverpool Psych Fest which has an AMAZING line-up. As I realized fuck there is no way I could make this one I made plans to do something else that weekend and two I wouldn't be able to afford to make it. Well today I found out foothill college radio is covering the festival with a live cam and broadcasting the festival.

I had forgotten about this band, but apparently when I first got on ? I requested the EP this song comes from, and today someone finally filled that request. This is NOT the best song on there:
Edit: Here's the Spotify link. They have at least one album, it looks like maybe 2?
