I noticed that at least Dre seemed to have a couple teleprompters at his disposal.
They certainly weren't trying to hide them.
Is that normal? What other acts usually have them as a fall-back plan or safety net?
Ya I noticed this too after watching some youtube videos. Found it kind of weird, its not like Eminem or Dre even used them. Wonder if anyone would have a good guess on why?
are you fucking kidding me
Prince uses a lot of them.
Not to be totally ageist, but a lot of older acts (the Stones, etc.) seem to use them.
Though he probably rehearsed plenty, I'd imagine Dre wanted them just in case he forgot a lyric. It has been a while since he's performed in public.

John Lydon AKA Johnny Rotten did the Outdoor Stage a few years ago with Public Image Ltd. He had a music stand with a binder on it and lyrics for all his songs. He was constantly looking at his lyrics. Guess all those years of drugs caught up with him.
What about those people who are up there doing sign language for all the lyrics and what's being said on stage. Could it be for them to read as well?
Go Green.

I saw Snoop Dogg use what appeared to be a list printed and posted on the stage to read out the cities when asking where everyone was from.
The singer for Underworld was singing while looking at a book on a stand with all the words to each song when I saw them in Halloween in SF a couple of years ago. Pretty lame if you ask me.
Often these books contain more than just words for songs, but various instrumental notes. I don't see what is so lame, most of the best orchestra's in the world have the sheet music in front of them even though they have rehearsed extensively. If it helps the performer to remember and put on a better show, what is so lame?
I feel it is very common these days, especially among older artists (as the poster above said). I've seen personally Springsteen, Aerosmith, Prince, Elton John, The Stones, Paul McCartney using them(to name a few). Eddie Vedder usually carries a book of lyrics that he refers to sometimes as well.
I saw Ozzy Osbourne a few years ago and it was super obvious he was using a teleprompter. The one time he left the centre of the stage he forgot the words to Crazy Train. What a mess.
I went to this concert once and every single musician was wearing a tux and sitting town and reading from sheet music. Pretty lame if you ask me.
No lasers.![]()
Hearing Mozart without laSers, Confetti cannons, fireworks and back up dancers is so fucking lame.
Also, every time I see the title for this thread I keep reading as "TELEPROMPTERS - WHAT SEX ACTS USE THEM?"
last.fm
8/7/16 - Sufjan Stevens @ Hollywood Bowl // 8/8/16 - Radiohead @ Shrine // 8/8/16 - Boris @ Regent
9/14/16 - Wilco @ Theatre at Ace Hotel // 9/18/16 - Kraftwerk @ Hollywood Bowl
I wonder if Bob Dylan uses a teleprompter these days and if yes, how it actually reads.
I don't mind this all that much. Performers get old and/or use too many mind-altering substances. They need all the help they can get.![]()
I miss talking to TomAz.
We all do. I live in the same city as him (unless he relocated) and rumor has it that at 3:15am if you listen closely and its really really quiet you can hear him telling you to go fuck yourself.
Sheet music for a live orchestra is way different. That's the norm when you go to a symphony, but it's not when you see a live EDM act, or any other non classical music act for that matter.
Maybe it should be the norm.

NOT TRUE. I have been to 2 of their SF shows (and have seen them a handful of other times). During their show at the Fox in Oakland (I was in the photo pit for that) and at the show at Cow Palace (I was against the front rail) Karl Hyde did not have lyrics in front of him. Need some proof? Here is a video clip (horrible sound, I'll admit...but I did not take this) showing Karl on stage at Spookfest in SF (Cow Palace Show) singing Two Months Off == I don't see ANY teleprompter or music stand with lyrics on it.
I won't stand for this kind of underworld-related blasphemy!
well, when I saw them, he DID have a music stand with a binder/notebook on it. he used it for some stuff he said he'd written earlier in the week. didn't bum me out at all.
