Default Uploading music from your iPod to your computer

Hey, I need to do what the title of this thread says and in my search online came across some website names like iPod2Computer.com, WideAngleSoftware.com, and CopyTrans.net. Does anybody have any familiarity with any of the programs offered by these sites? Can you vouch for their legitimacy or whether they work well? I'm going to be downloading the program onto my parents' computer and would be gutted if I introduced a virus to their system.

You don't need any software to do this. You should be able to turn on options enable disk use and keep library organized (sorry not in front of a computer with itunes right now, but you should be able to figure it out from there. The ipod will show up as a removable drive, music will be organized by artist, album, song, and you can copy it onto your computer from there.

Boot into a Linux Live CD.

Plug in your ipod. Click and drag the songs onto your hard drive.

I don't think this works. My understanding is 'keep library organized' keeps your computer directories organized but not the way it stores songs physically on the ipod. Last time I looked at this (it's been a few years) the ipod drive itself had a very odd directory structure for the music files. My recollection is that it was very difficult to deal with.

edit: these people know what I'm talking about.

Just use winamp, it'll let you copy from ipods, works like a charm, even works for iphones which almost nothing else does.

Right, I was assuming that when he copied the music to his computer that he would actually want to be able to tell what the files are. If you don't do this, you can still copy the files but they will use the ipod internal naming schema. (You can still tell what they are if you look at properties -- should show artist/song, but it's annoying as hell to sort through). This option will sort them into Artist -> Album -> # -> Song when displayed on your computer file system.

Either 'enable disk use' or 'manually manage' will allow you to use your ipod like any other removable drive. the difference is 'enable disk use' still allows auto-syncing. 'manually manage' means you will have to manually sync.

I've done this many times when buying new computers, or after reinstalling iTunes.

Here is a better article that explains how to do what the OP is looking for:

ipods can too, marooko, if you choose the correct settings. I used to be an ipod hater and have had different mp3/media players because I "wanted them to act like a usb drive", but my ipod does that, and honestly has performed a LOT better and lasted longer than the others. All the other players I've had lasted maybe 1.5-2 years tops before breaking (out of warranty), have never had any serious problems with any apple hardware. Though I do bitch about iTunes quite often.

You erase your iTunes library when you reinstall iTunes?

Not intentionally, Tom, but I've had iTunes blow up and take my library file with it, a couple of times. Mostly old versions. I really, really, really hated iTunes but can't say I've had any major problems in the last couple of years.

    Please rephrase your concept...

    Fuck iTunes and fuck Windows.

With Linux, any time I plug in my ipod, it thinks there is just another usb hard drive plugged in.

ipods are actually pretty cool devices. Great user interface, light weight, video, etc. Only thing that sucks is the price.

What a weirdly courteous spambot, searching out a preexisting thread.
