    Default Student areas of California

Me and some mates are coming over from the UK to Coachella. After the festival we are doing a bit of travelling around California. I was just wondering where the best student areas are to go out drinking? We are on a budget and presume these areas will be the cheapest etc...

    Mani,

While Wes had some good ideas, you'll get a better response if you let us know what specific areas of California you plan to visit.

well if your gonna be in orange county area after i suggest DOWNTOWN FULLERTON its abunch of bars and clubs right after another. the slidebar is a great bar if your into rock music . if your gonna be in Los Angeles county STAY AWAY FROM DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES its dirty and full of bums . old Town Pasadena is cool lounges and bars and clubs. and stay out of west Hollywood its the gay area . unless your into that . PS if your thinking cheap stay out of Hollywood why it aint cheap . all that enjoy the festival and have fun in Cali

ISLA VISTA!!! You can't go wrong with Santa Barbara! Especially during spring quarter! The best time of the year to go! Ahhh I miss long days of drinking in the sun on oceanside DP.

If you're going to be in California you have to stop by LA Live, most of the restaurants there are expensive (I recommend Yard House, good vibe, big, popular, lots of chicks and reasonable prices on their alcohol) You'll also be able to check out the Staples Center which is right across the street.

Hermosa Beach and Hollywood also have a lot of good spots.

I'm sorry, but nothing the OP said, indicates he'd have any interest in LA Live.

OP, if you are looking to get pissed on cheap drinks with cheap chicks and cheap bros, stick with Hermosa Beach, Isla Vista, Fullerton, and Pacific Beach.

You definitely want to hit up Hermosa Beach for the above reasons. We host UK soccer coaches in their 20's every summer and this is their favorite place.

Definitely come up to Santa Barbara and party in downtown SB on Thursday and Isla Vista on the weekend. People are crazy up here.

I can confirm this. Downtown is great on Thursday nights and IV is one square mile of parties. Be sure to pregame hard before going out in IV. The only alcohol available is plastic handles (if you're lucky).

Alumni weekend of UC Santa Barbara is the last weekend of April if you're still in California. Should be the most packed with parties/things to do downtown and Isla Vista, but any other weekend is good.

Since you're on a budget I'll agree with previous suggestions of Hermosa Beach and Isla Vista, but I'll also toss in San Luis Obispo. SLO is a great college town that's 15 minutes away from several different beaches. Hostel Obispo is in a great location, walkable to downtown bars. Be sure to have the tri tip sandwich at Firestone Grill.

If you do hit up Hermosa check out Surf City Hostel - right on the beach! And if you like beer Naja's Place in Redondo has 88 taps, most of them good.

Problem with Isla Vista is there are no hostels and motels aren't really walkable from the party area but try your luck on http://www.couchsurfing.org/.

    Enjoy your trip!

Definitely hit up Isla Vista, which is a square mile of pure fun and debauchery adjacent to UC Santa Barbara (my alma mater)

Apparently Isla Vista is the place to be... why haven't I gone..

I dont think anyone mentioned San Diego area, like the gaslamp district. Many, many bars lined up. Also, the sun shines brighter there.

I would second the SLO recommendation. I like near Berkeley, but the bar scene there is sort of spread out and not great. However, Oakland has some great stuff downtown that's more or less close together, and of course San Francisco is always good. Hell, Walnut Creek has a decent bar scene if you're OK with yuppies (no offense WC-ers)
