So far so reliably good. I'm 95% on this right now, especially with the layaway option. Spain is dirt cheap currently and the lineup always has tasty treats. I'll be in Berlin until right before this and might have finalized a job in Sevilla by this point, so it shouldn't be too difficult. And yes, Off Sonar is sure to be bonkers.

I'm surprised there's not more interest in this, from international boardies and otherwise. A great price for an always-great lineup

It is pretty absurd how much goes on in that city that week. Beach parties, boat parties, rooftop pool parties, and various clubs/venues. It's going to take a good deal of planning but oh so worth it. I'm 100% going so we should try to hit some shows together.

Also, after comparing this announcement to full past lineups, this is only about 1/4 of the lineup. I expect plenty more names.

I don't know what a James Blake DJ set is like, but it's not something I would get excited about. Richie Hawtin can be good, but he makes the rounds pretty regularly. Amon Tobin and Modeselektor have been festival whores too. A lot of stuff under that is pretty awesome though. I guess I just expect something a little more unorthodox from Sonar. There's a bunch of Euro electronic fests that I find more enticing than this lineup. If this was in the US, I'd probably try to go.

I've been planning to go to out to Spain during Sonar for a while and while very little on the initial announcement has me shitting my pants, I have no doubt the week is going to be a ridiculous party with tons of great music. Again, this is 25% of the lineup and even when it's 100% out - there's still a shitload of parties with acts not even on the Sonar lineup playing at venues all around the city. Scroll through that off sonar link I posted above. It's fucking insane. CLR showcase from 6am-4pm. OK. Bpitch Control boat party with a 200 person capacity on the fucking Mediterranean. OK. free beach parties, pool parties, etc. Sure why not. And while I'm there I can be a tourist in a city I've never visited and eat a bunch of bomb food. deal.

I've been preparing myself for nothing extraordinary but I'm pleased with what they're throwing out so far. But I'm very excited to see who else they end up booking. Aphex Twin wasn't announced last year till March (along with 50 others) so I have a feeling there will be some good names to come.

it's a fun festival and a non-stop party. I have a soft spot in my heart for this festival since that is where I saw Roxy Music two years ago.

This electronic music lineup seems to be shaping up better than some of the precedents. I'm sure they'll announce a few surprises, not too many great adds. Glade is happening the same weekend in the UK, and their lineup is always great.

So Roxy Music live lived up to your expectations?

My expectations were not disappointed. They are one of my favorite bands, and I enjoyed the show a lot. I wasn't expecting anything like their Musikladen session from 1974 or even their show at the Apollo back in 2001, but instead a great show by a legendary 40 years old band with a still brilliant lineup. The band, especially Manzanera and Mckay, were fantastic, and Ferry with a weaker voice was able to connect very well with the crowd and give a good performance.

Back to Sonar 2012, Mouse on Mars' new album comes out in 2 weeks, so we might know what to expect for their set. I wish they'd perform Paeanumnion, though. It's such an interesting project.

FWIW, Spain is pretty cheap, but Barcelona specifically is not. Lodging can be pricey so would suggest for those of you that are 100% certain you're going, book early. Hostels & apartment rentals are usually a pretty good deal. If you try to book hotels last minute, you're going to end up paying a lot for a shit hole. On the upside, drinking and eating are not very expensive (at least by US major city standards), and even in the center of Barcelona, there are plenty of places to buy fresh groceries. Even Cortes Ingles (huge department store chain) has a grocery store -- it's very similar to Marks & Spencer Simply Foods in the UK, you can buy fresh produce, healthy pre-packaged meals, etc, so if you have an apartment or hostel with a kitchen, it's very easy to save some money by eating a few meals "at home."


I haven't decided whether it's better to just go ahead and buy the festival ticket or wait and try to book/buy everything individually. I'm tempted to get the festival ticket since I've been to Barcelona before and might do the festival stuff during the day instead of touristy things.


I am really excited for John Talabot, and also for the rumor of my DJ obsession playing an off sonar type party.

The Bloc lineup is ridiculous, BUT I'm trying to tell myself that Sonar will probably end up being more acts that I haven't had a chance to see yet. (Bloc so far has a lot of stuff that I've already seen or will have a chance to see in SF). Plus those off Sonar beach and boat and late night parties...

Not to mention, Bloc is in London, it will be more expensive in every way.

The expenses for Bloc isn't what is keeping me from attending (I'd be able to stay at my uncle's most of my visit) - it's the fact that it's IN London so the crowd is gonna blow, sound is gonna blow, and Adam & I have both been there several times so it's not as exciting as visiting Barcelona (since I've never been and he's been once but it was for work). And yes, the after party possibilities for Sonar are much more appealing as is the weather and the food!

The audio/visual aspect of Bloc should be amazing, though, since the Shangri-La crew is behind it, but Spain is obviously more of an adventure, and the late-night aspect would be impossible to top. Barcelona never sleeps, except maybe during the day.

I'm just really weary of outdoor events in London. The few I've been to had terrible crowds and the sound wasn't nearly loud enough. From what I've read on various sites, a lot of Bloc regulars are pretty displeased with this venue change.
