Times of Day That Coachella 2012 Artists Sing/Rap About

When an act is billed that high, is a big get (their/his first US performance), and not only fucking sounds like nighttime, but also the narrative to all their/his songs take place during nighttime, then of course it is worth Goldenvoice's time to think about it.

Does anybody else in this thread think The Weeknd on during the day is even a remote possibility?

I'll go first. The narratives of both "The Chronic" and "Doggystyle" primarily took place during the day if you've seen most of the music videos that came from the albums. Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg will probably play on the main at 4pm because of this.

Kaiser Chiefs has a song called "Saturday Night," so I think they'll play at night. They also have a song called "Heat Dies Down," which probably means a sunset slot.

Azealia Banks' video looks like it takes place around 5:30, which fits with the thematic narrative because cunts generally get eaten after work. To be safe, we'll say 6:00 in the Gobi.

The lyric "Something tells me that I'm dreaming," along with the thematic narrative of making a girl's wish his command, over a funky bassline, suggests to me that this is a night time act. Also, note the darkness of the background in the video, with the central characters needing to be colored in neon to be visible. 10:00 PM Sahara.

He even says "Trust me, I'll be there." Confirmed.

The thematic narrative of this video is the band, especially the lead singer, getting away from something. During the day, I might add. This makes sense because people often get away from things during the day, so as to avoid dangerous night driving. 2:30, most likely on a stage outdoors. It would be weird to see them perform this song at night when I know damn-well it was set in the day.

This one is difficult. Novacane is usually only administered during normal dentistry work hours (9-5), suggesting a day time performance. BUT, "Novacane," here, is metaphoric. He references Jigga and Z-Trip's Coachella performances, both of which occurred at night, but also alludes to ingested cocaine for breakfast--typically a morning meal.

Law of averages suggests a 4 PM Mojave set.

I disagree with this interpretation. Clearly they are playing early in the day. The video you posted was filmed in Joshua Tree NP.. that's right by Coachella. And it's daytime in the video. Plus there's a fire, and they're at the Gram Parsons botched-cremation site, and they're singing about Emmylou Harris. Gram and Emmylou did a killer cover of "We'll Sweep Out The Ashes In The Morning".

edit: You're wrong about them playing the Gobi too. That video is set in the Mohave desert.

Those are all good points, Tom. So maybe First Aid Kit doesn't HAVE to play after the sun goes down? I think a good compromise is maybe when it's starting to get more cold and bitter on the polo field. Hmmm. The "star comes cold" line is what's getting me. I know stars exist during the day. I mean, the sun is a star. The sun......is a star. Fuck. Yeah, First Aid Kit is playing during the day.

I originally thought this set would be taking place in a new Air Conditioned frosted dome to best capture the recording conditions of the previous album. However, after further examination of the lyrics he talks about telling people to be patient. This tells me it doesn't have to be in a cold and frosty new dome but just very late at night or even early morning when the desert cools off a bit. (we all remember how patient we had to be for Prince and he didn't even sing a song with those words in it). Finally, he says "in the morning i'll be with you". In fact the coachella camping area and Wisconsin wilderness are almost identical in every way.

That clinches it. This set will likely start around 4:30AM and conclude at sun up. It will also take place on the campground as it closely resembles the Wisconsin wilderness.
