Frankly I'm even a little unclear. Some think The Weeknd is just Abel, some think it's Abel and his producers. I have no clue.
I don't mention lyrics in that quote, but the topics his songs are about. Read it again. It's not the lyrics, it's the thematic elements and the overall ambiance. And it's not the drugs, it's the setting for them. He/they/whoever are an undisputed nighttime act, just like Gayngs last year.
I'm not so sure that thematic elements are really considered when scheduling. That would be a giant subjective pain in the ass. If it's not directly related to the lyrics, then it's even more subjective and probably not worth Goldenvoice's time to think about. You seem somewhat reasonable because you shot down the "Goldenvoice doesn't put repeat bands on smaller stages" theory, and had good reasons, but I think you're reaching with this.
ATDI and Le Butcherettes won't conflict. Omar's playing in both: http://lebutcherettes.net/post/15590930256#notes
Florence>>ATDI>>>Dr.Dre with Justice on the outdoor before Dre makes a lot of sense.
It's likely because bands are usually more popular when they come back, thus getting a bigger stage and a later time. Having that sort of scheduling rule is just too arbitrary. I seriously doubt that's a consideration that comes up in meetings. "How about Explosions in the Sky in the evening on the Outdoor?" "Oooooh you know we can't do that. They played the main in 2007 and we have that rule." An Outdoor slot at night is a higher booking than Main stage during the day, so it would make complete sense to put them on the Outdoor.
Bottom line: Goldenvoice will do what makes sense in the context of that year.
I don't think it comes up in meetings at all because Paul T makes all the set times himself. He said that in an interview. Unless you are suggesting Paul T has meeting with himself. Then that is possible. But what I am saying is that I may just be a thing Paul T tries to do... not to put bands on a smaller stage on their return.
Upcoming Shows:
Fever Ray: 5/18 @ Metro
Radiohead: 7/07 @ United Center
Smashing Pumpkins: 8/19 @ Xcel Energy Center
Metallica: 9/02 @ Kohl Center
Metallica: 9/04 @ Target Center
Metallica: 9/08 @ Alerus Center
Riot Fest: 9/14-16 @ Douglas Park
Metallica: 10/16 @ Wisconsin Entertainment and Sports Center
Metallica: 3/09 @ KFC Yum! Center
I think you should switch Sleeper Agent and The Airplane Boys... Sleeper Agent is more of an "open the outdoor stage" kinda band. The Airplane Boys would do better in a tent.
COACHELLA VETERAN
2001 ~ 2007 ~ 2010 ~ 2011 ~ 2012
This is the worst of the predicted schedules. I'd have ATDI closing the Outdoor opposite Dre/Snoop. I like the Weeknd on the Main prior to Dre/Snoop. Maybe Justice switching slots with The Weeknd or in the Sahara. Modeselektor earlier in the day. DJ Shadow to close out Mojave.

Jesus Christ you are an idiot. When an act is billed that high, is a big get (their/his first US performance), and not only fucking sounds like nighttime, but also the narrative to all their/his songs take place during nighttime, then of course it is worth Goldenvoice's time to think about it. Just listen to the records, look at the billing, and look at the fact that people have been calling them in the Gayngs slot and closing a tent/stage since before they even were on the poster. Seriously, in The Weeknd request threads.
Does anybody else in this thread think The Weeknd on during the day is even a remote possibility? The answer is no. So shut up.
I think it is a given that given the direction the EDM is going this year that Beats Antique will be nowhere even NEAR the Sahara.
She has the right sound for Outdoor but is probably too big.
Almost sure that The Weeknd is simply Abel. I thought, for a while, that Illangelo, his producer, might be a part of the actual "group" but later gave up that theory because of their remix for Lady Gaga's 'Marry the Night' being written as 'Marry the Night (The Weeknd & Illangelo Remix)'.
No. The Weeknd will not be on during the day. Don't even know why this idea is even being entertained.
Is there some sort of insider information onto the projected reclusive nature of The Weekend? And is that why he is such a huge get, because we know that he's not going to like, tour the fucking fuck out of his material in 2012?
4/15: Tama Sumo @ Seattle
4/25: Rolling Coastal Blackout Fever, Sloucher @ The Crocodile
4/27-30: Stagecoach
5/16: Mount Kimbie @ Neumo's
5/25-27: Sasquatch
I think the "huge get" part comes from this being his first announced show in the US. I read a quote from Drake yesterday that foreshadowed a tour for The Weeknd so it isn't like it's going to be rare per se.
This kind of explains his reclusive nature though: http://exclaim.ca/Features/OnTheCover/waiting_on_weeknd

modeselektor is definitely in the sahara, beats antique is definitely not.
Lol@this ATDI vs Le Butcherettes conflict. Did this guy look anything up?
THIS IS SOME REAL SHIT.
Justice vs Dada Life? Dont see that happening. Way too similar fan base...The sahara would be empty for Dada Life.
I like where Justice is now, but guessing their slot/stage correctly is the hardest one on the lineup.
Coachella 2017
Solange April 21
I doubt the Growlers would close the Gobi, more likely acts to close IMO: Greg Ginn, Wild Flag, Beats Antique or Araabmuzik.
Not especially helpful but ya I don't the the Growlers deserve such billing..
