But to suggest that this year's lineup is somehow more mainstream or pop friendly than lineups of the past is just wrong and misinformed. You could even call it ignorant of the facts.
Let's take a look at the historical evidence:
- Beck, Tool, Rage against The Machine... you're right. None of those are Mainstream names at all.
- Weezer, Paul Oakenfold, Jane's Addiction, Fatboy Slim. Wow. Shocking none of these are acts I've heard on the radio... oh wait, yes, ALL OF THEM ARE.
- Oasis, Prodigy, The Strokes, Paul Oakenfold... fucking CAKE.
- The Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The White Stripes, Jack Johnson.
- Radiohead, The Cure, the Pixies
- Coldplay, Bright Eyes, Weezer, Wilco, Snow Patrol - Yeah. You're right though. Weezer isn't a mainstream band at all.
- FUCKING MADONNA PLAYED. It is literally not possible to get more mainstream than that.
- Red Hot Chili Peppers again. Oh, and Interpol, Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, and the Decemberists. Those are all mainstream pop bands, bro.
- Jack Johnson. Roger Waters. Death Cab for Cutie. Prince. All very mainstream fucking music, dude.
- Some guy that was in THE FUCKING BEATLES. How underground is that? Wow, you fucking toolbag.
- Jay-Z and Muse. Those are super subversive acts. I wonder how anyone ever heard of those crazy bands.
- Kanye West sure isn't mainstream at all. And neither are Kings of Leon. That shit is deep underground.
Do you see my point here? There are literally huge mainstream pop names every year of Coachella ever. To suggest that:
