I guess I just didn't know what to expect from his set. I had never seen him before but I love all his studio stuff, so I was a bit surprised, I suppose, by the amount of rap he played. I love lots of hip hop and all that stuff, but the set just seemed a bit disjointed and he had some aimless rambles into the mic that really didn't improve matters. I also am not sure why he was in the Gobi and GY!BE was in the Mojave. The crowd was crazy and i was getting jostled and annoyed throughout the set.
^
haha, so you were getting annoying because of how into it the crowd was. Thats usually a good thing, not a bad thing. You're ridiculous.
Just listening to Sin's excellent recording and trying to put together a track list... here's what I've got so far:
Lil Wayne - Dying
Breakage - Hard
Flying Lotus - Zodiac Shit
Flying Lotus - Nose Art
Odd Future - Doms
Jay Z & Kanye - Niggas in Paris
Two Fingers - Fools Rhythm
Tyler the Creator - Yonkers
Erykah Badu - The Healer
GZA - 4th Chamber
Jaylib - The Official
Flying Lotus - Massage Situation
Flying Lotus - Mmmhmm
Wacka Flocka - Hard in the Paint
Lou Donaldson - Gravy Train
Am I missing anything super obvious?

Updated with what I know.
I have seen Flying Lotus a bunch of times, and this was my favorite show by a pretty good margin. Yeah, he talked and said some dumb shit. Ok. He also had a live drummer and bass player. He also played some great fucking music. I didnt think it felt disjointed at all. I still don't, and I've listened to the recording of the whole show a bunch of times. Different strokes I guess.
Dance Magic, you like this one better than his 2010 set?
This. How do you not get this music????? This dude was literally KILLING it up there. And if you don't think there was a flow... The way he mixes in his old tracks, new ones, and choice selections of other shit... genius.
Having only seen the 2009 Dome Set, the 2010 set, and this one, I can easily say this 2012 set was by far my favorite. I loved the 2010 set but it felt like he was attempting a much more experimental/trippy style then (still awesome), than he was in 2012. This set was dancy/groovy, less trip-outs, more fat beats. I agree with some of the people calling it a definite festival set. Had the entire tent going hard from front to back.
'09 still holds a special place in my heart. Trippiest shit ever... in the dusty dome... heat sickness and mushies. Coachella memories for sure.

I was left underwhelmed because I felt the set didn't go anywhere, there was no cohesiveness throughout. It was a jumble of random "thoughts" with no underlying theme or direction. I had a ton of fun, his DJ/party sets are always fun (I'm enjoying the shit out of Jason's bootleg), I just had my sights/expectations set a bit higher. I was hoping for something special, not the same festival set he's been playing since last year. This was my fourth time seeing him with Ron and Thundercat, but I didn't feel they gelled at all, just a bunch of soloing and noodling. Again, no obvious direction or cohesiveness. Different strokes I guess.
Yeah I feel like you just went in expecting a bit too much. I had a blast, but I wasn't expecting anything really, and definitely wasn't expecting an experimental set. So I was satisfied.
Well, I'm sure the acid helped. Definitely helped me... breaking out the liquid dance moves during flylo
Of course I had high expectations. He's my favorite live artist working today. I'm definitely jaded by the number of times I've seen him live, no question, and I understand what that does to expectations. I wasn't expecting experimental, just something different from what he's been playing live for the last year.
For everyone who loved it, just know that he can be even better, which is what keeps me coming back to his sets even if I'm not blown away once or twice (two "meh" sets out of 10 is a pretty good average). I hear he's hitting the road again this year and I'm very exciting to see him play more club dates.
Just take more acid and quiet down, ya'll. HODGY BEATS IS HERE!

does anyone know where that intro with the epic symphony strings came from? is that an original track or did he take it from somewhere? It sounds familiar but I can't tell.
ehh.. Earl is a pretty shy dude, it didn't even look like he wanted to come out but Flylo coaxed him onstage. then he got super embarrassed and put his glasses on sheepishly and walked off...
