Yeah, that should be a blast.
Yeah, that should be a blast.
so here's what I'm thinking as of now. ? means if you see something better on the schedule let me know
Friday: the Tontons -> Code Orange Kids (?) -> Title Fight -> Mac Demarco -> The Impossibles (?) -> No Age or Kurt Vile (depending on my mood I guess, worst conflict of the weekend) -> Thee Oh Sees -> Bill Callahan -> Flag (but maybe some of Snoop too, cuz, you know, it's Snoop)
Saturday: Frank Smith (?) -> Ola Podrida (?) -> Retox (?) -> White Lung -> part of Melt Banana maybe -> Chelsea Light Moving -> Geographer (?) -> most of Tenacious D but leaving for -> Television -> Deerhunter -> maybe part of Sparks if I'm feeling it -> Descendents (but maybe some of Ice T too, cuz, you know, it's Ice T)
Sunday: Lemuria (who I've seen twice already) or True Widow -> Narrows (?) -> The Men -> Cloud Nothings -> a big gap -> The Dismemberment Plan -> Bonobo? Gojira? -> Daniel Johnston -> Slayer, but if it's fucked up, I'll probably just stay for a while and then head over to King Kahn

Tom, are you getting into town on Thursday? You should come out and watch Kurt Vile at 9:45pm at Mohawk.
After Chelsea Light Moving, you might want to check out Pelican. They're a great heavy instrumental metal band. I didn't really care for Geographer that much. And if you haven't seen Bleached yet, definitely check them out instead of Retox - they're getting really good live and I think you'd dig them. And on Sunday, check out Washed Out, they're really great live. In general,we are going to be at a of of the same sets.
OK. scratch Retox.
The thing about Bleached is, their description on the FFF website made me recoil in disgust:
two mentions of 'beach', and 'yolo'. sounds preposterous, and not in a good way. After listening to Bleached's beachy tunes, you begin to contemplate what the fuck you're doing with your life. Suddenly, quitting your 9-5 job, packing up your car, and heading to the nearest beach doesn't sound all that bad. Yolo, am I right?
They're a throwback mostly girl pop punk band. it is kind of "beachy," I guess, but mostly they're music switches between sounding like Blondie and The Misfits.
also yes I am getting to town on thursday, i am driving up from houston where i have some business i am attending to on wednesday, i don't know that i'm gonna feel like fighting a club crowd scene after all that, but we'll see.
That Simian Mobile Disco show at ACL Live is back now with Twin Shadow. Requires fest wristband plus RSVP which is required but does not guarantee entry. You don't actually have to like them on facebook just hit continue.
I RSVP'd but that night I'm likely going to be at the Tenacious D night show and bet it will be too full to get in after.
The Mohawk is incredibly small so you might want to get there early for Tenacious D. It's going to be incredibly packed.

If it sucks I'll happily just go out drinking somewhere, or just hot up some other random show. I saw Kurt in August at FYF and it was great.
Pretty upset I'm not going to be able to make it this year. I purchased my ticket for Quicksand alone. Hoping they will come back through Austin soon.
I'm still working on pulling it off, but it doesn't look good. Bummer.
On the bright side, I'll be in Bordeaux for three weeks.
My plan so far--
Thursday Night -- The Tontons/Kurt Vile @ Mohawk --> Pop 1280 @ Beerland
Friday -- Probably sleep in/relaxed breakfast but arrive in time to catch Mac Demarco --> Patton Oswalt --> Either Big Freedia or Thee Oh Sees --> Bill Callahan (this conflict with Cut Copy sucks) --> Flag --- Not sure yet which Nites show to check out or if we'll rest up for our long Saturday. Who/what are The Misfits currently? Are they any good? I very much like many classic Misfits songs I just have no clue who/what these guys are.
Saturday (Long day! When am I eating?) -- Frank Smith --> Ola Podrida --> Bleached --> White Lung --> The Chromatics --> Glass Candy --> Television --> try to grab the end of Body Count for Cop Killer --> Sparks and leave early to arrive early for Matt Bearden/Jenny Slate/Craig Robinson/Tenacious D at the Mohawk
Sunday -- Polyphonic Spree --> Julie Ruin --> Washed Out --> Wild Child --> Daniel Johnston -- Watch a little of Slayer to finish (I've seen them 4 times already and I doubt my girlfriend will enjoy them much) -- Whether we try to catch Doug Benson/Sarah Silverman at the Paramount will depend on how tired we are and how well the other Nites shows went.
Based on the above undecided whether to pull the trigger on USP. We're gonna be at the yellow stage (tent?) a lot so I'm very curious about the viewing platforms there. Since I'm getting to every Nites show I want to go to near what I assume will be door open time I'm thinking I won't have to be too worried about not getting in? It would help if they made it a little easier to upgrade to USP closer to the fest (making me pay full price then applying to rebate my credit card for tickets already purchased is... inelegant).
Does USP get you anything at Nites shows?
I was talking with a bartender at a local bar on Sunday. It sounds like the Nite shows the past couple of years have been priority for festival attendees and if room is still available, purchase at door for everyone else.
Having said that I think I'm going to do the drive down Friday evening and see if I can't get myself into the Mac Demarco Nite show.
FYF Fest 8/27 - 8/28
My Nites itinerary:
Thursday - Kurt Vile @ Mohawk followed by RJD2 (maybe).
Friday - I'm interested in Christian Bland (from the Black Angels) and the Revelators, Bob Mould, Star Slinger, Subhumans, and Mac Demarco. I'm definitely open to suggestion.
Saturday - Twin Shadow/Simian Mobile Disco
Sunday - Bonobo
for those going to Kurt Vile at the Mohawk, what time are you thinking you'd head over there? like real early to get a spot or what?
True Window starts at 1pm on Sunday so in case your a person who shows up late to festivals,Gribbz .I suggest you can see a 3pm Star Slinger set so you can see a 11:30pm True Widow set which is followed by a 12:30 Pelican set.
this may be old news but it was news to me: early wristband pickup thursday noon-midnight at FFF box office or at Holy Mountain Nites.
