Grabbed the new Savages, QotSA, Yo La Tengo, Darkside, and Iceage albums. Thanks for the heads up!

Apparently, I missed the first pressing of Sky Ferreira's album on vinyl over the weekend madness (site says sold out at least). Hoping for a second printing or a cheap ebay grab now...

Check Craigslist, I often see great audiophile shit selling at discount prices.
    Thanks for the help!

I'm good with the speakers I have. I definitely need a new/better receiver. What should I look for when it comes to cartridges?

You have a lot of options. One of the current "standard" cartridges out there is the Shure m97e or xe or something. A solid cartridge with great sound at the price and I believe you can even upgrade the stylus. There's an Ortofon cart that I see around a lot as well. Personally, I'm obsessed with a line of hifi cartridges Stanton did in the 70s & 80s and stick exclusively to those. I dig the sound. The key is finding what sound you dig. Do a little research on models & consumer reviews & whatnot. I'm not as up to date on current stuff, so someone else should jump in here but I bet you can get something solid for $100 or less.

I had a loooooooong week at work, so I stopped into the Berkeley Amoeba tonight to buy some stuff. I didn't do a thorough dig by any stretch, but the used stuff was mostly lacking and the new stuff wasn't remarkable either. It's kind of a bummer.

Is that the Voodoo reissue? How is it? I've picked it up and set it down at least a half-dozen times over the last 8 or 9 months.

It's not bad, but I don't really have anything to compare it to since I've never owned or listened to the OG. It just sounds smooth, soulful and sexy to me.

You should get it. It's really well done, beautiful packaging and the sleeves don't stick at all.

I haven't listened to the repress, but the packaging is better than on the original copy. Just looks nicer. I don't think they did a remaster job.

Also, we're having a big vinyl driveway sale tomorrow morning! 8-12/1ish in Outer Sunset, thousands of titles priced at $1 or $2. Rock, jazz, vocals (TONS of 50s/60s mono Sinatra on Capitol), soul, disco, Disney, and whatever miscellaneous shit I can throw out there. Robert Redford narrating a set about the language of wolves & their songs? Got it. An aerobic record manufactured by Stay Free feminine hygiene products featuring Cathy Rigby? Oh yeah, and only a dollar. Soundtracks & shit. Feeling lucky!? We'll sell you unsorted, unprocessed boxes of 50-60 LPs for $20. Wanna live DANGEROUSLY? I'll put together a mystery box of 1950s Orientalist/overtly racist lounge music for $10. We got deals for days.

Get at me, all interested parties.

I went to Amoeba on Thursday in hopes of getting a copy of Split that I saw on the wall recently, but someone had purchased it. Damnit. On the bright side, I got $30 in store credit plus $22 in cash for a stack of unwanted records..

Holy cow, you got that much? You must have had some good stuff in there.

Next time you clear some room, and this goes for all of you, send me a little list of what you're getting rid of. I have cash-in-hand and guarantee I pay better than the $.15-$.20/record they'll credit you with. Can't guarantee I'll want them but it's something to think about. I'm always looking for inventory.

And/or post 'em here. That said, Hollywood pays substantially better for used records as compared to the Bay Amoebas, even better than their CD exchange rates, which already are much better. They gave me $20 for a single Sonic Youth record once and I saw it on the wall a week later for $30.

I was going to ask you about this, actually. Though I'm not sure if you'd want some of the random dance music singles/EPs. I don't even want money for them, honestly.

Maybe we're overdue for a record club / swap meet

Greg, I'm assuming you're exaggerating by saying Amoeba gives $0.15-0.20 a record (I've usually gotten $1-10 depending on what it is), but yea, their prices even in credit are insulting. CDs, on the other hand, ... I still need to start getting rid of my CD collection (everything except the relatively rare stuff) and I already know they're going to pay nothing. I'm thinking about just donating the common stuff to take a tax write-off.

I really like that album and feel like he was kind of underrated/ignored except for part of a year in the late 80's. Though I suppose fair play for someone who is kind of loony and has the incredibly overblown ego to rename himself after prophets/eschaton figures.

Eh, not really. They really don't pay unless you have something unique or sought after. And even then they gouge you. The most I ever got was $40 in credit for a load of really good early rock records. Most time it's $8 for 25-30 LPs, if I'm lucky. Rasputin pays, though, and they'll buy fucking anything.

I dumped four dance music singles some record store in the UK sent me by mistake and said not to bother to return because it would cost too much, a Liz Phair album that isn't the good one, Foo Fighters' One By One, The Donnas' Spend the Night, Beastie Boys' Too Many Rappers. The only one that goes for more than $5-15 on discogs was the Foo Fighters.

Am currently looking to unload Pretty Girls Make Graves - The New Romance and Tool - Undertow and Opiate.

Not sure on release. Will have to check the UPCs and consult discogs. Both were purchased at a Hot Topic back in 2002.
