So it looks as if Best Buy is liquidating their vinyl inventory, as if you click here you'll find that almost all are priced half off. There's a lot of good stuff in there in almost every genre, well worth the time looking at the 300 or so listings. I got the following for $60 (free shipping):

    El-P - Cancer4Cure
    T-Rex - The Split
Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Unknown Mortal Orchestra
    Mellowhype - Blackandwhite
The Flaming Lips - The Terror
    Jay Reatard - Blood Visions

slightly off topic, but only slightly.

I'm considering selling my CDs. with the exception of a few rare or collectible items they are useless at this point. I only have a use for mp3s or vinyl. I still want access to the music, I am just tired of the physical storage. if I keep them they will be in a box in the the back of a closet. I've ripped them all. a physical backup is nice to have, but there are much more efficient ways to back it up. the reason I hesitate is that they are the only thing making all those digital files legitimate. though I am not opposed to piracy I tend to try to pay for things that aren't garbage/unreasonably priced/impossible to find. then again, putting a CD back on the market isn't quite the same as never having paid for it in the first place.

    I'm interested in opinions.

When my vinyl collection got to the point where I had the things I would want physically, at a minimum, I started selling my CDs. I frequently used them as the way I paid for interview gas money, but when I had a big set of them they'd also be a way to get more records from Amoeba. They have a deal where they'll give you more money in trade-in than they will in cash back, so you can find some good shit on vinyl and get rid of CDs at the same time.

Be advised: SF and Berkeley Amoebas pay less than the Los Angeles store, if you have the option.

I don't really have that option, but I'm not too concerned with maximizing my income from this. I'm mostly concerned with not having to store them any longer (spurred somewhat by moving recently and having had to move two huge, useless boxes of them).

did you keep digital copies of the CDs you sold?

I'm thinking of the doing the same thing, though I haven't ripped mine yet. (I don't want to pack and move several boxes of CDs that I never play either).

We should see if Greg would let us crash one of his vinyl pop-ups with CDs too, or something, heh.

Edit: I think I'd keep digital copies of everything I'm intending to replace with vinyl when possible. That's not really legal, but it feels ethical enough to me.

I already had everything digitized on my external, but yes, I did copy everything prior to selling it.

I sold all my CD's (several thousand of them) about ten years ago. I've got all my music (CD's, vinyl, and downloads from various sources) stored on an external hard drive, as well as a series of five 160GB iPods, mainly for listening in the car. One of the best decisions I've ever made.

The Beta Band - Champion Sounds 12"

Thanks BritChris. I thought I'd just enjoy it, but truly this record needs to be heard on a huge soundsystem that can handle the gigantic bass sound they went with on these songs. I listened to Dry the Rain at least 5 times today.

Is the repress out there now, or did you find an original? If so, how much?

When it came out it was, without a doubt, my favorite Kanye album to that point, and I bought a copy right away. I can't believe the ridiculous prices it goes for now.

It's the repress. But according to owners of both, they're identical except for the CD being slightly different. I've yet to open mine.

As someone who sold some of his vinyl in the mid/late 90's, I'd urge caution. If you have the space to keep them, keep them. While I think cd's will be easier to re-buy compared to vinyl should you sell them and regret it in the future, why sell if you don't have to ??

Stores don't pay crap for cd's up here. SF may be different.
