Gave....10th anny Turn on your Bright lights --Interpol 2lp/DVD
White Stripes--Hotel Yorba, Live at the hotel Yorba 7"
Stoked for both!
I sold one CD on Discogs for $125 bucks, so I used some of that money to place an order tonight:
Queens of the Stone Age - Rated X (Rated R deluxe reissue)
The Byrds - Sweetheart of the Rodeo (180 repress)
Pallbearer - Sorrow and Extinction
Damn! What CD was that?
The Velvet Underground - VU LP
Clearly.
And that's some shitty business with the Dark Star 7", Bryan, but I was pretty much expecting that. How does the rest of the set sound?
EDIT: Let me know how that Byrds repress sounds, I've nearly bought that many times.
Kevin Drumm - Relief

that record is great... but this is his crowning release this year... and it has been a very, very busy year for mr. drumm.
The guy is always churning out great stuff. I'll probably pick up Crowded at some point. It makes sense that you'd like it more, too, due to what I know about your taste i.e. you seem to be more into the musique concrete stuff.
I really love Relief though, it's just such an affecting mixture of pretty ambient drones and harsh noise attacks. When I emailed him to order it, he remarked that it's pressed at 45 RPM and "I won't listen to it again, but I think I might have liked it even more at 33", haha.

that's great. i've listened to both Relief and Crowded at the wrong speeds. Dying Air was also a great one from this year... i should dig out those cassettes again.
the main reason I dig Crowded is it capitalizes on many of his recent strengths. as far as the harsh wall of noise stuff goes, I doubt he'll ever be able to top self-titled and Sheer Hellish Miasma in my book... so I'm happy to see him take new directions as always.
i assume you've listened to Imperial Distortion? if not, definitely check it out for some more faces of his music.
Oh yeah, I have. I've bought some of his self-released stuff this year too. In fact that reminds me that I have a 2x CS I bought from him I haven't listened to; I should get on that.
I regret skipping his set at Hopscotch to see Jacaszek. Jacaszek was cool and all, and I went with him since he's from Poland and probably won't be around the US in the foreseeable future, but my love for Kevin Drumm has grown a lot between then and now.

Jacaszek never plays... i probably would have made the same choice. Drumm does destroy live though, and he's played a lot less frequently in recent years.
The rest of the set is specfuckintacular. The b-side, a different take on Born Cross-Eyed, is great. It was my first time hearing the first album and Anthems and they both rocked me. The best thing in the whole set is the original mix of Aoxomoxoa. I'd only ever heard Lesh's 71 remix and it absolutely pales in comparison to the psychedelic original version.
Ha, yes. So wacky and indicative of their headspace at the time. Listening to the og mixes of those the "Anthem" & "Aoxomoxa" reminds me a lot of "After Bathing at Baxter's," a record I absolutely love.
EDIT: "Anthem" was the second Dead release I ever listened to and was like, "what the fuck is going on here?" I'm glad you dig, hardly anyone thinks of them as a legitimate psych band, but their early shit is pretty out there.
Christmas + record shopping:
CD:
Smashing Pumpkins - Pisces Iscariot (remastered box)
LP:
William Basinski - The Disintegration Loops
Deep Wound - Deep Wound
Dinosaur L - 24 -> 24 Music
Godspeed! You Black Emperor - Hallelujah! Don't Bend, Ascend
Shoes - One in Versailles
Shoes - Bazooka
Smashing Pumpkins - Pisces Iscariot
The Velvet Underground - Scepter Studio Sessions
A handful of thoughts on this stuff:
-The Basinski and Dinosaur L sets are fucking beautiful.
-Pisces is another well-done Pumpkins remaster. This shit sounds so much better.
-The Shoes reissues are really beautifully done as well. Need to listen to determine how they sound but they look great.
I went buckwild today throughout LA and got a bunch of stuff I've been interested in for some time:
Nails - Obscene Humanity 7"
Descendents - Everything Sucks
Hawkwind - Warrior On the Edge of Time (Red bootleg vinyl)
Royal Thunder - CVI
Municipal Waste - The Fatal Feast (Waste in Space) (green vinyl)
Pig Destroyer - Book Burner
Daughn Gibson - All Hell
The Germs - (GI) (180 Gram repress)
Faust - So Far (Four Men With Bears repress)
Ramones - Ramones (180 Gram repress)
From listening tonight:
Nails - Hot damn this is one hell of a 7". They pound out some next-level grind/death/hardcore stuff over the course of three songs, initially from their inaugural 12" and redone here in better quality and better performance. Ugly music played hideously.
Pig Destroyer - Definitely top 10 of the year. Probably top 5 to be honest. They just murder every riff, and somehow make a few catchy grindcore songs.
Ramones - Definitely top 10 of all time. Probably top 5 to be honest. One listen was enough to make me question why it took me so long to buy this album on vinyl. Not their best (Rocket To Russia) but definitely their most immediate and bracing.
Municipal Waste - I'd never heard them before, and they have a ton of fun on this. Drunken thrash metal with some hilarious lyrics. Beer and solos abound, and I couldn't be happier with the results.
Faust - Goddamn I forgot how great this album is. I've owned the first one and IV for years, but this is the one where they hit their peak. Daddy, take the banana, tomorrow is Sunday.

Finally found an affordable new copy of Bjork's Post on vinyl from CDUniverse - $23 and it was their last copy. They say it was issued in 2007, so I don't know if it's the 180g reissue, or the limited 200g DMM, or neither, but I don't much care being that I've been looking for this album on vinyl for a while now.
