Vegas pains my soul, is there any city in America that has so much stuff yet is so incredibly culturally bereft it hurts??
In four years of living here I know of 2 people that got their vehicles stolen & one person who got stabbed at a bus stop because he was drunk, running his mouth & had initiated an assault. 99% of the people slamming this city lost their ass at a table or blew all their money on hookers n blow & had to have daddy wire them funds to get home.
It depends. If your view of Las Vegas is the Strip and major hotels and casinos then it could be considered correct.
However, if you actually get your ass out of a casino you might find something culturally or spiritually rewarding. Go to First Friday and you might see a growing artistic community. Hang out at The Beat. Go to Las Vegas Academy, see some of the local theater groups. If you seek natural wonders go see Red Rock, Mount Charleston or Valley of Fire.
Trouble is 99% of people who visit here have no inclination to do anything but seek out a buffet, a cheap show etc.
But that aside, I see the same gaudiness and culturally bereft whenever I visit Hollywood, Venice Beach or LA theme parks. Would you say that is all LA offers? Yet that is the LA most tourists experience.
You unamerican son of a bitch. How dare you. Vegas is all about 'merican culture! Pan handlers, glutonous fat slobs, greedy millionaires, vapid clubbers and all kinds of addicts. With tons of shiny and bright lights screaming 'look at me' 24/7. It's beautiful. Not to mention fake New York, Paris, Italy and the slave laborers peddling smut. We haven't even touched on the museums, acrobats and street preachers yet...
The Double Down!!!
Is it still open?
people make sweeping judgments about a place they have never lived. so ignorant
Why would anybody choose to live in a place like Vegas? It's not like we're going to move there just so our shit-talking is validated. The place is scummy and that's that. It's great if you think you have your own individual take on the culture and art and whatever else is available to you in that city; fact remains, Vegas is a nasty little shithole tourist trap. Just like all big cities. Have fun.
Truth is you just don't know, and I'll leave it at that.
Since everyone has decided to just troll this thread (myself included) here is a list of reasons why I believe Las Vegas sucks
-The restaurant scene is populated mostly by celebrity-chef bullshit and even the most progressive of dining options in Vegas are years behind SF or NYC
- The nightlife is truly awful, the music is usually top 40 bullshit mixed with a little bit of mainstream Hed Kandi house, and few clubs are places to listen to good music but rather buy bottle service and hit on corny white chicks
- The shopping there is garbage, it's the most redundant bland gucci bullshit possible.
- Outside of the strip; a lot of the neighborhoods are really gross and have that horrible never ending suburban hell look to them. I haven't really been to another neighborhood outside of Downtown vegas or the strip that has any character or charm besides "shanty truck-driver meth town"
-Some of the cities biggest yearly events are the Adult video Awards and now Electric Daisy Carnival...yeah...
I know there are a few other venues in Vegas that aren't entirely horrible but they don't bring through enough talent to put themselves on the level of any other cities, probably even lacking behind Phoenix & Salt Lake City, def. behind Denver.
No offense, but some people even consider LA culturally bereft on the global stage. So I believe you'll have even harder time arguing points that make Vegas seem like a cultural hub.
But hey, they filmed one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces of all time in your city;

Vegas has some of the most diverse and best food options in the world, and most of them are off the strip.
Can't speak on the nightlife since I am 20 years old, but I can imagine it is full of douchebags LIKE THE ENTIRE STRIP (all tourists).
Outside of the strip, Vegas is one of the best urban planned communities in the entire world. The strip and downtown are the oldest scummiest places in Las Vegas, following North Las Vegas (ie. our ghetto, add horses/cowboy people). The entire west side of Las Vegas is gorgeous and nearly brand new. Great food, great infrastructure, beautiful open sky and weather 24/7.
I agree that Vegas is culturally lacking compared to other cities like SF and NYC but the reason for that is so painfully obvious. In the 1950s and 60s (and onwards), when SF and NYC were destinations for young intellectuals to create a life/cultural movement, Vegas was a "scuzzy tourist trap", sure. It was a city built on greed/sex/crime etc. We're a long way from then. If you haven't "really been to another neighborhood outside of Downtown vegas or the strip that has any character or charm" then I'm sorry, you "haven't really been" to Vegas at all. You've visited 1 fucking road.

"Some of the cities biggest yearly events are the Adult video Awards and now Electric Daisy Carnival...yeah..."
This is a bad thing?
It's true Vegas lacks quality traditional culture, but it's not completely devoid. It does have quite a history and is obviously up there with the most recognized cities in the world. And if you really want culture it's just a 4 hour drive to LA. Lovely place to visit but I would loathe to regularly deal with such a ridiculous notion as "last call".

I don't like leaving the aria/Cosmo. Love the fucking Aria.
Hate most of Vegas.
How could you know? You hate most of The Strip, which is understandable. But Las Vegas isn't just the Strip, in fact the Strip isn't Las Vegas it is Paradise-unincorporated town within Las Vegas.
Las Vegas is many things, it lacks a culture because the city grew so fast in the 1980's it didn't develop like a regular city. But when you see the music and art scene that is developing it is absurd to say there is no culture.
vegas is fun. haters don't know shit.
snowboarding an hour away, buffets, people getting smashed and having fun
I thought you could get away with a lot in LA, no sir, vegas has that shit down.
But you gotta go and ball out, you can't go and be conservative, you might as well go to orange county for that.
Vegas is what it is. It ain't pretty, but I love it because you can get into anything you want to at any time of the day. If you have some self control, don't mind having very few true friends or a bunch of superficial friends and have the drive to succeed, it is really easy to make a living here.
The culture here never develops because it is a transient city. People come and go all the time. Work (either the lack of it or the service industry in general), addiction or general frustration with the Vegas scene tends to drive people away after about 5 years. The people that are from here (me) or the ones that make a career here find it hard to develop true friendships. The social impact of Vegas being a transient city mixed with tourists coming and going all the time fuel the shallow culture that we have. Since the service industry is pretty much the only industry we have here, I don't see changing any time soon.
If you are 21+ come visit though! You can have anything you want!

You can make $80K per year doing Valet, Bar tending or being a Cocktail Waitress. No education needed. Just saying there are reasons to live here.
Not really defending the rest. Some areas of town are pretty scummy, but there are several nice areas with cool stuff going on.
