Panda Bear starts the party on this one for me, and it's quite the debut for a new year of music. Keep it going here.

Yeah, but those Bowie comps were also released on Tuesday dude.

That Panda Bear album is hot fire. I listened to it twice last night and I kind of just want to hear Mr. Noah on repeat for the next month.

Seriously though, Mr. Noah sounds like he ignored Centipede Hz and Tomboy and just took the next step from the '09 Animal Collective work. The beat is a banger, there are so many fucking crazy sounds floating around that somehow cohere into a soundscape, and I'll be damned if it isn't about the finest melody he's written. The whole album is a beast, and I hope I find a few more songs that shine as bright as that over repeated listens.

"Boys Latin" and "Acid Wash" are the ones that slay for me as well, although "Mr. Noah" is indeed equal to them in my opinion. That bouncing vocal line in paricular on "Boys Latin" is basically Jesus.

PBMTGR is a fantastic album; he's toned back the reverb/delay a lot from Tomboy, and I think that was a smart choice given the nature of these songs. It's the last almost half of the album, from "Tropic of Cancer" to the end, which have piqued by interest the most and what I feel will be the most divisive feature for listeners, as I can see the soft-rock/New-Age vibe putting people off. Songs like "Lonely Wanderer" and "Selfish Gene" certainly toe that line, but I think he's pulled it off very well.

Another 2015 release I've been enjoying the last few days is the self-titled debut from Viet Cong; with two members from Women there are certainly similarities to draw between the two in the spindly, brittle guitar work and claustrophobic atmosphere, but whereas Women were content to wallow in their own anguish Viet Cong aggressively turn those feelings outward. The first single (below) maybe doesn't capture that feeling as much as the other songs on the album, but it's certainly one to seek out if you're a fan of all things post-punk.

The Viet Cong record sounds like they are obsessed with This Heat. That's not a bad thing, but man some of this songs just scream Deceit.

Yep. I've listened to that song so much since the EP dropped.

Yeah, you're right about it being really different - my first listen of this one reminded me of my first listen to The Life Pursuit in that I almost had to check if it was the same band! I've given it a few more listens since then and each has been a bit more rewarding than the last, probably because I'm not so taken aback by the electronics-heavy nature of the songs.

Another release I've been enjoying is Irreal by Disappears. To be honest I didn't know much about this band going into it (I really grabbed it because I thought the cover was interesting), but this is a really solid no-wave/post-punk album and (in doing a bit of reading about it/the band after my first listen) I guess represents another leap forward with their ever-developing sound.

My second listen was infinitely more rewarding than the first. Once you get their old sound out of your head (a sound that I love btw) it becomes a lot more enjoyable. The new material sounds great live, too by the way.

    EDIT*

"Play for Today" kind of reminds me of "Haiti" by Arcade Fire.

Anyone listen to Ghost Culture's self titled? Actually some sweet production on it. Very smooth strong electronic sounds with a late nite dance vibe. It reminds me of Junior Boys. Vocal melodies aren't the best but the ideas are good and engaging.

I hit the Disappears album once. A lot of unique stuff going on in that one. It's going to need repeat listens. Not sure how crazy I am about the vocals.

I can see what you mean, but to me with the big difference in this song/album being the live drums used "Mr. Noah" sounds like the logical next step after songs like "Slow Motion" from Tomboy. MPP was so dubby and void of live drums, although I do definitely agree about the sounds cohering into something solid a la the '09 material.

I wasn't much a fan of the first Father John Misty album. It just sounded tepid and a bit half-finished, especially when compared to his spectacularly entertaining live shows. The new record, I Love You Honeybear, is heads and tails above the last one. He bounces along genres with abandon, but retains a strong sense of songwriting and an even stronger understanding of the dynamics of his voice, creating a great album that I've already jammed way more than the last one.

Really good start to the year for indie rock. Father John Misty, Panda Bear, and Belle and Sebastian all put out very good albums compared to last year we were grasping to find something to really like. I think at this time only Mogwai Rave Tapes was considered decent and then much later Kil Sun Moon.

I'll probably give it a spin, but man, that "Bored in the USA" song? All I could think is "this guy can seriously go fuck himself with these lyrics."

I mean on one hand, if this is at face value, seriously, go fuck yourself. On the other, if its some sort of meta-commentary, Christ that's almost even more cliche and hackneyed.

Sleater-Kinney's new one doesn't come out until the 20th, but it's streaming on NPR' First Listen right now and my initial impression of it is highly favorable. It feels like their time apart actually strengthened their sound. I think this reunion was perfectly timed, because if this release is anything to go by, then my impression is that they were apart just long enough to each grow a lot musically but not apart so long that the band dynamic is now awkward and forced. On this album, at least, it's like they're picking up right where they left off, except better.

That's after one listen, mind, I'll have to spin it more to develop a more confident opinion.
