I remember seeing this flyer and when I saw both Fatboy Slim, The Chemical brothers and Aphex Twin I lost it. Unfortunately Aphex Twin cancelled. Still, Fatboy Slim and the Chems were awesome.

My first year. I remember seeing Nikka Costa, St Germain & Fatboy Slim. There must have been a whole lot of wandering around in between.

St. Germain was stunning. For me, they set a standard by which all future sunset sets would be judged against.

Fatboy Slim killed it. And I have been massively disappointed by him the two times I've seen him since (including his Coachella set a few years ago).

And there is a map in the 2001 booklet, I just don't have a scanner at the moment, so I haven't uploaded it (I plan to redo the image section on the site someday). But anyway, this should hold you over if you're curious.

Yes the heat sucked that year. I spent pretty much the whole day in either the insomniac tent or the Sahara.

Right. I brought my then-girlfriend with me, and we got separated at the male/female search lines going in. It was between 11-12 noon, blazing hot, and the lines were moving really slow. When I finally got inside, I couldn't find her anywhere. We never hooked up again until the end of the festival. Turns out she passed out while in line and was taken to the First Aid tent, where she spent most of the rest of the day. It never occurred to me to check there. I just thought she got lost in the crowd.

One of my biggest regrets is not going to Coachella in 2001 due to the heavy jungle/d&b lineup (kinnda like this year Mmmm =-) ??)

And yes, Fatboy was ridiculously amazing. I've seen him twice since too and they don't measure up to the magic that year. He killed it.

I remember when he dropped Star 69 and the Sahar.... err... Insomniac Tent erupted. Outstanding set.

I was in college at the time and went with a bunch of my guy friends. Apparently we were really into hip hop at the time, and I remember seeing Roots, Del, St. Germain, Roni Size, and Mos Def. I was excited to wrap up the evening with GangStarr, but it was super windy. I remember techs trying to board up DJ Premier's tables with plywood or something at the Outdoor Theater to no avail. That was disappointing. I don't remember it being that windy since, thank goodness.

The Roots were awesome that day on the main stage - always the cool cats in Hawaiian shirts and sun hats. . Del was somewhat on point (from what I recall) and St. Germain was magical. I remember getting fliers for Coachella from the parties we went to in LA, but what I don't remember is that tickets were only $65; what a deal. To be twenty again...and paying $65 for a day of Coachella.

That kind of music - the jam band electronic stuff - gets booked where I live all the time. EOTO, Lotus, Papadosio, Boombox, Disco Biscuits, STS9, Orchard Lounge, all of them. We recently had The New Deal play and I assumed it was just another one of those bands that only exist in that vein of fans. They weren't that good, but then again, hardly any of this stuff is.

Watching this youtube again makes me realize how far Coachella has come. The Coachella stage doesn't have big screens and there are much less visuals present. Those screens behind Fatboy Slim and lasers were the only visual aspect of the Insomniac Tent.

Wow, I barely remember anything from 2001! I remember wandering around, dancing in a tent(probably the Sahara from looking at the map). I remember seeing Weezer, Gangstar, and of course Janes Addiction (although I saw so much more I don't think I even knew what I was watching lol).
