Kind of like Rush, I've long been familiar with some of Darkthrone's work, but recommend a few albums as if I weren't. I'm listening to Circle the Wagons right now, the first time I've heard latter-day Darkthrone, and loving it.

I think you should go ahead and start with the newest one, V, it's probably the most accessible and closest to what they'd be doing live.

BUT I also liked following along with the progression and expansion of their sound in order across Ancestral Star, Lost In The Glare, and finally, V

Ancestral Star is definitely my favorite record of theirs, by a good bit.

I think technically there's only two studio albums, and then a few comps. But I far enjoy "Stereotype A" over "Viva! La Woman." More upbeat songs, dreamy without losing touch. "Viva! La Woman" has a few great songs: Sugar Water, Theme, Candy Man are all really interesting, but only for how oddly arranged they are in that Soul Coughing 1995-ish beat poet kind of way.
Stereotype A is an easier listen, bigger sound, albeit a bit more girly. Moonchild, Spoon, Working for Vacation challenge their singing a bit more, and I like how playful they get with it. There's a 'best of' hits I think on Spotify, but I like to play the two albums back to back, since they're both short.

Sci Fi Wasabi is one of my favorite songs ever. Birthday Cake as well. I think they initially tried to make a career writing songs solely about food.

That's funny, because I noticed almost ALL their songs are food related too, but wasn't sure if I should mention it. Birthday Cake is definitely the comic relief on Viva! La Woman- so silly.
But I stand with Stereotype A, the songs flow really well- Moonchild > Sci Fi Wasabi > Clouds > Speechless >King of Silence are so beautiful and sophisticated, and then into the hard doom of Blue Train reminds you of the broken up grit from Viva! La Woman, making the whole album so easy to listen to.

Hard one to compare to anyone? In this thread, you name an artist that you aren't familiar with or would like to dig into, and then someone recommends an album to start with.

Other Lives has 2 albums. How about you listen to both?

OH SORRY I MISTOOK THE TITLE, CUNTIE.

Thought this was one of those threads where you suggest a relatable band.

Your bitch-femelitist tone is greatly appreciated by all those who surround you though. So, so funny.

Here's another suggestion -- try reading the first post of a thread. It generally gives you a good sense on what the OP intends the thread to be.

I mean this in the nicest way possible, and I don't think what I said prior was bitchy at all.

Then again, you are obviously terrible at making sense of completely sensible word formations.

It's always good to remember that we are constantly surrounded with people who struggle to understand the most basic concepts and who react to someone gently instructing them in the right direction with hostility because they lack the capacity to self reflect and laugh at their own stupidity.

Also, can anyone recommend an album by Mason Jennings - something before 2006 Boneclouds, already familiar with his latter work.

See, Guedi, because you're an elitist (which, well, I mean you are, but justifiably so) and also a woman, that makes you a femelitist. Because every quality you possess must somehow be related to your gender, as that is your principle defining characteristic.

    Ugh.

I really feel like you don't know what the words "elitist" and "narcissism" mean. No judgement, though. I mean...you're the one who misunderstood the concept of this thread, and then lashed out with misogynistic insults when the actual intent of the thread was quite calmly explained to you.

I should also note that I make fun of myself regularly on this board. And when others make fun of me when I say stupid things, I don't cry and throw insults like a big baby.

You are totally, 100% right about the "woman saying something = PMS," though. Spot on. I'm spotting right now, actually. MENSES JOKE!

I think the funniest thing here is that Big Black only have two studio albums. Both Atomizer and Songs About Fucking are essential. The former head been rereleased with the Heartbeat single as The Rich Man's 8-track Tape.

The three early EPs were collected as The Hammer Party and would be the next place to go.

They also have two live albums; I've only heard Pigpile but it hasn't done much for me.

Screaming Trees-era Mark Lanegan or solo Mark Lanegan? If the latter, my intro was Bubblegum, which I haven't heard in forever but remember being great.

The latter. Thanks. I heard a song on Pandora (can't remember which one?) and it was really good.
