In Sides or Orbital II are both fantastic, and both contain some of their most popular songs.

I'd start with What Makes a Man Start Fires? in regards to the Minutemen but you can't go wrong either way.

For the Minutemen, as much as my gut instinct was to rip on Rag and Bone for recommending What Makes a Man Start Fires? over Double Nickels, it's probably the preferable place to start. It's got their wide ranging work, but it's 20 songs as opposed to 46. It's not AS good, but it's easier to approach and it's still quite good.

For Husker Du, as much as I think Zen Arcade is their best work, you should probably go with New Day Rising, and here's why. Zen Arcade is (like Double Nickels) very long. The production on it is also pretty lacking (they're all first takes of live-in-studio recordings), but the songs are huge. New Day Rising has slightly preferable production and the songs are huge. It's also quite a bit shorter, so a better entry point.

The Feelies - Crazy Rhythm and JAMC - Psychocandy are both no-brainers, in that the bands never put out anything quite as good after them.

I'm jealous as hell that you get to hear the Minutemen and Husker Du for the first time.

Rip away but it sounds like we're in agreement. I find double albums to be tougher entry points.

These Foolish Things. It's his first solo record. It's a covers album, but it's really good and he tends to be really cover heavy anyway.

Popol Vuh; I have no clue where to start with them as it seems like they are pretty varied in terms of sound from one album to the next (and there are a lot of albums).
