It's hard to go wrong with either of their first two albums: Songs the Lord Taught Us and Psychedelic Jungle. I also have a soft spot for Stay Sick!, which doesn't do anything new but is a whole lot of fun.
Hmmm. I might have to do a "Young'Uns Guide" entry on these guys.
I'm just going ask about sparks to make sure i start off right with them.
o god i love the cramps

The Flaming Lips
My Bloody Valentine
Transmissions From The Satellite Heart for the Flaming Lips. It's diverse, poppy, and not too overwhelmingly concept or oddity ridden while still exhibiting all of the band's key traits. Plus it has some of the best songs they've ever done.
Don't start with Loveless for MBV. It's really dense and it takes you shifting your musical perspective to really see why it's raved about. I'd say start with the You Made Me Realise ep. It's short and therefore more easily digestible, and the title track is one of the most immediate things they've done.
just got 2 for thurs lcd t5 show. the lcd-strokes-lcd 3 day nyc run is in place!
Dips All Day Everyday.
That reminds me how much i love the Nick Cave/Warren Ellis film scores - both the Assassination of Jesse James and The Proposition scores are amazing. i need to get ahold of those. I have no memory of the score for The Road though, i was too busy being depressed

They're playing here soon. I think I've seen their named mentioned a few times on the boards...
In all seriousness, for the Greenhornes, I love their self-titled album. It's a pretty good approximation of what they are about.
