I'm on the other side of the fence with Sgt. Pepper. Makes me happy that it's usually #1 on all-time albums list, and def think its the best Beatles record and one of my top 10 albums of all time...

For me, the reason that Achtung Baby is so great (and is my favorite U2 record by a mile) is that they took a chance with it.
After the MASSIVE worldwide success of The Joshua Tree, they could have just rested on their laurels and re-written a lot of those tunes from then on and made a career out of it. But they went darker. They went heavier. They even experimented a bit.
And on the verge of almost breaking up, Bono penned a wonderful ballad ("One"), that many argue is their finest song. Achtung just does it all right for me, and doesn't have one ounce of filler.
Of course, they'd later go on to take another bold chance, experimenting with the electronic side of things with Pop (my 2nd fav U2 album), and missing the mark with the majority of their fans. I still applaud them for taking the chance, that album has aged much better than their pre-Joshua Tree material has without a doubt.

blah blah blah was referring to these terms:
- Krautrock, post-rock (WTF? is that really the best name you can repeatedly use?), rhythmic rock jam, lots and lots...
that plus the "Vocabulary show off" call-out, I'd say this thread is not benefiting from over-simplification ("anything from Arcade fire or Animal Collective"), nor over-complication (see above quote).
Basically, 'talking about music is like dancing about architecture.'
I thought most of us were in agreement that U2 just sucked and therefore inappropriate for this thread.

I honestly have no idea if I agree with you or not. It kind of is and it kind of isn't. I remember reading a review somewhere saying that Zappa's production and Beefheart's refusal to wear headphones in the studio kind of ruined that album. There are undoubtedly some really great songs on Trout Mask but it's never cohered into a single great album for me. It's just too much of a mess.
I made myself listen to it right now... There really are a lot of great things on it that I forget about. Little nuggets of genius all over the place. But on the whole I just can't hear it's influence anywhere and it's just too ridiculous for me to appreciate. The name of the album is Trout Mask Replica, the name of the artist is Captain Beefheart, and the music follows right along.
It's definitely a weird album(cult following) that u need to listen to a lot because it's awesome to be able to rant along to .
Fast n' Bulbous!!!!!!
but Frownland,Ella Guru,Moonlight on Vermont,China pig check those songs out.
I was going to change my avatar yesterday to F.U.S.E's Dimension Intrusion or to PLASTIKMAN's MUSIK album but i got cool feet about it(that so nerdy by the way that i actually worried about the changed Avatar)

Absofuckinglutely! How could I have forgotten this one... I think Soft Bulletin is decent and I admit to giving it a good amount of spins when I first heard it, but I can't stand most of it today. It constantly gets praised as one of the best albums of the 90's and I think it's completely unwarranted. I'll even take Transmissions over it any day.
I've always listened to the Lips a lot and know all their albums in and out, but I really can't say I'm that big of a fan. It's fun music occasionally, but I think Coyne is annoying more often than not and his quirkyness comes off as pretension to me. It's all really simple and repetitive to me as well.
edit: On another note, Embryonic has gotten great reviews as well and I couldn't even get past two listens to that album. That was the first of the Lips' that I genuinely thought was bad.
I can only hope you'll forgive me
I'm trying to think of highly acclaimed album that I just don't like, but I can't right now. I read the OP as something less "liking it but not understanding where everybody else is going crazy for it," and more REALLY not enjoying something that gets constant praise
It's kind of Pet Soundsy.
The Soft Bullentin annoys me for the fact the first track is race for the prize(Mokran Remix) after that it's ok.Race for the prize is a great song by the way

Sigs are so 2009 - the irony here is intentional, right? If so, brilliant.
How can I forgive a muppet? I would just as soon decapitate you.
