Yes, it surprises and shocks me. Perhaps it's the era I grew up in. All through elementary school and up through high school we heard about how safe it was, that no one person could control it, that it took special codes and there was a guy with a briefcase on his wrist (I mean literally, handcuffed to his wrist) with the Secret Nuclear Codes who followed the president wherever he went. I mean it was just drilled into our heads how many safety redundancies were built into the system. And now we learn nuclear weapons were codeless, and guarded by a lone US armed soldier? Jesus. Yes it's shocking.

Hmmm, I guess coming from the generation that followed, where we learned to not trust anything the government told us and to recognize that nuclear arms and nuclear energy were found in everybody's backyard, makes these insights not so surprising.

Hah. I appreciate this Gothamist piece. It makes me so angry when real estate developers try to use juliet balconies as a selling point for crappy condos and lofts in pseudo-hip areas of town.

I was ambivalent til I read about how juliet balconies had committed atrocious genocide in Syria.

The Atlanta area has been completely paralyzed by yesterday's snow and ice. You know those scenes in The Walking Dead where huge rows of cars have been abandoned on the freeway? Add snow and that's what I-75 looks like this morning. Absolutely unreal.

My wife is currently stranded at the school where she teaches after volunteering to help look after the 60 or so kids whose parents couldn't get to them when the bus services were suspended yesterday afternoon; by the time nightfall rolled around the roads were all parking lots. So she slept on a beanbag chair in her classroom. She and the kids and her colleagues are still stranded, and they're calling in state troopers to help the kids get home. My wife says the teachers are resigning themselves to the fact that they're probably looking at another full day and night at the school. What a shitshow.

Is the snow actually that ridiculous or is it just like normal Midwest levels of snow and no one knows how to deal with it?

It's a little bit of both. Having grown up in Ohio the snow and ice aren't actually that bad (like, 3" of snow and overnight icing). But the problem is that the storm hit much farther north than forecast, and when it hit, it hit hard right at the time schools and businesses were closing to get people home. It literally took people I work with ten hours to get twelve miles home, and that's only after they abandoned their cars and walked miles home because the traffic was at a standstill. The way things are snarled, plows and salt trucks can't get through to work on the roads, and wreckers can't drag the abandoned cars off to the side. It's just a mess.

It's all relative because an area's preparedness for snow is generally in proportion to the amount of snow they generally get. I went to school in Central NY which gets WAY the fuck more snow than anywhere in the midwest or pretty much anywhere else in the country due to the lake effect. However CNY cities have a shitload more plows and infrastructure to deal with it. The amount of snow in this particular situation nobody in NY would have batted an eye at, but because midwest aren't scaled to respond as quickly it leaves conditions dangerous for longer than it would have elsewhere.
Add to that the fact that area folk don't have as much practice dealing with it.

So yes the snow was probably relatively a big deal, and yes they're also being giant pussies about it at the same time.

My campus had only closed a couple times this century and that was because of a massive flood. I had to trudge through literally FEET of snow sometimes to get to class. Some steeper pathways had a chain set up for folks to hold on to because fuck your ice, get to fucking class, that shit's too expensive to miss.

This piece helped to sort of explain the timeline of what happened and why it became such a problem so quickly after the snow hit.

That sounds about right. It's not that the weather was apocalyptic; it's that a million people in the metro Atlanta area all hit the road at the same time trying to get home. By the time everything had iced over for the evening, a run-of-the-mill traffic jam had turned into a disaster.

    What a nightmare.

"In an age of increasingly wild weather, it helps to stay on your toes"

This is a crazy concept. Not a new one, but the idea is daunting not only for the obvious reasons but because everybody is going to continue moving to California. Ugh. I'd rather deal with crazy weather than more fucking people.

I'm cool with that. Rent prices will continue to drop in the midwest and rise out there and all the bitches with thin skin will flee and shit will be more fun overall.

....I have lived in California my whole life and if there has recently been some sort of increase in people moving here purely because of weather related reasons, I have not noticed. At all. I have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm like 95 % positive that there is not currently a mass migration from the midwest or any other part of the US to California. Californians can barely afford to stay in California.

I can't believe the massive explosion in California's population in the past 14 years.

(Note: the website here is mostly stupid, but the statistics they use have been widely circulated and supported. Lets not state "facts" when the exact opposite is the case.)

For people wondering how Atlanta basically became inoperable in three inches of snow, here's a good article:

    http://www.politico.com/magazine/sto...l#.UunSjXddWUA

Basically situates it a problem created by a confluence of factors like suburban sprawl, reliance on highways over mass transit, and the failure of municipalities to coordinate with one another. In other words, yeah, Southerners can't drive for shit in the snow, but it's more complicated than that.
