No, they certainly are not a "joke" band. Only an idiot would think that way. They are one of the few genuine creators of old school NYC rap in the mid eightees. Kanye West on the other hand is a fucking joke and hasn't done a fraction of what the Beastie Boys have accomplished in their almost thirty year history.
Beastie Boys are about as novelty as Beck.
I have a full on confirmation, heard it from 3 band members tonight: FOALS.
One of the guys exact words, "yeah we are coming back around to the U.S. in April, we are doing a tour around Coachella". So there you have it, 2nd confirmation.

I just picked up the new LA Record zine & theirs an interview with Foals and they confirmed that they will play at coachella 2011!!
I had a word with Rusko after his show here in Victoria, mentioned coachella to him and he says he's coming back in 2011.
dancing so fast
The Get Up Kids have a new album coming out in the Spring. One of Matt's other projects The New Amsterdams played in 05 or 06 and Spoon (which Rob is also in) played 2010. I say this is highly likely.
Hopefully Guided By Voices, too.
They put out their first album Licensed to Ill in 1986 (the year I was born), but they were releasing EP's since the early eightees. They maybe weren't one of the first rap groups from NY, but they definitely were one of the early pioneers.
And Kanye West and Eminem have NOTHING on The Beastie Boys. This type of contemporary shit can't touch the rhymes of the three legends of the rap game.
This is RIDICULOUS. I offer as evidence some of each's most "grand-standing" lyrics:
BBs - Intergalactic: Well, now, don't you tell me to smile; you stick around I'll make it worth your while; got numbers beyond what you can dial; maybe it's because we're so versatile; style, profile I said; it always brings me back when I hear ooh child; from the hudson river out to the Nile; I run the Marathon til the very last mile; well, if you battle me I will revile; people always sayin my style is wild; you've got gall, you've got guile; step to me, i'm a rapophile: if you wanna battle you're in denial; comin from Uranus to check my style; go ahead put my rhymes on trial; cast-you-off-in-to-ex-ile.
Kanye - Gone: Ah-head of my time, sometimes years out
So the powers that be won't let me get my ideas out
And that make me wanna get my advance out
And move to Oklahoma and just live at my Aunt's house
Yeah, I romance the thought of leavin it all behind
Kanye step away from the lime-
-light, like, when I was on the grind
In the "One, Nine, Nine, Nine"
Before, model chicks was bendin over or
Dealerships asked me Benz or Rover, man
If I could just get one beat on Hova
We could get up off this cheap-ass sofa
What the summer of the Chi got to offer an 18-year-old
Sell drugs or get a job, you gotta play gyro
My dawg worked at Taco Bell, hooked us up plural
Fired a week later the manager count the churros
Sometimes I can't believe it when I look up in the mirrow
How we out in Europe, spendin Euros
They claim you never know what you got 'til it's GONE
I know I got it, I don't know what y'all on
I'ma open up a store for aspiring MC's
Won't sell 'em no dream, but the inspiration is free
But if they ever flip sides like Anakin
You'll sell everything includin the mannequin
They got a new bitch now you Jennifer Aniston
Hold on I'll handle it, don't start panickin, stay calm
Shorty's at the door cause they need more
Inspiration for they life, they souls, and they songs
They said sorry Mr. West is gone!
Eminem - Invasion: Here we go,
I shoulda known
I was bound to get pulled
into some bullshit
sooner or later
you litte haters
are too jealous of us to love us
you hate it,
G-unit made it,
then Obie's coming,
D-twizzy's comin, ya sick to
ya stomach
50 percent of it's 50 Cent,
the other 50 percent of it's whose color of skin it is
But if you even considerin' takin' our label down,
you better find our building
and fly a fuckin plane into it
But I ain't tryin to get to intricate into it,
I'm just tryin to give you a little hint for your own benefit
cuz then it's gonna get to the point
where it escalates into some other shit,
then I'm a flip
then I'm a get to
stompin' in my Air Force ones,
won't be able to tell if its two purrs or it's one
Cuz it's gone feel like so many feet kickin you,
you think Nike just made these cleats into shoes
I don't know what it is or what it could be,
but I get a woody,
when these pussies try to push me
thinkin they gone put me in a position to pickle me
yall tickle me pink,
I think I'd just rather have Pink tickle me
Hickory dickory dock tickety tock tickety,
a little bit of the diggety doc
diggety mixed with a little bit of the jigga j-jigga
with a small pinch of Biggie,
look at me,
I'm just the bomb diggety
They were a punk rock band before Licensed To Ill came out, which was originally intended to be a parody album of guys like Run DMC. Turns out they were actually pretty good. That's why they completely changed direction on Paul's Boutique, they didn't feel like fucking around anymore. That record is one of the best hip hop albums ever, but they were not pioneers of early NYC rap, they made fun of it.
When it comes to lyricism/rhymes, to say they were better than Eminem is completely retarded.
I am a huge Beastie Boys fan, but I have seen them many times when they weren't so old. I would only see them at Coachella if nothing at all interesting was happening at the same time.
12/6: Japandroids/DIIV
1/10: Mister Lies/Matthewdavid
Rasooli, the Beastie Boys themselves would think you're a fucking moron.
Gogol Bordello
lyrically, the beastie boys do not compare to eminem
here are a couple favorite lines, as picked by the most hardcore fans on the official beastie boys message board:
"I went to get a loan and they asked my race, I wrote down human inside the space"
"so put a quarter in your ass cause you played yourself"
clever but nothing really impressive in terms of lyrical technique.
here's just one snippet from Em's first album:
"my pen and paper cause a chain reaction
to get your brain relaxing
a crazy acting maniac in action
a brainiac in fact son
you mainly lack attraction
you look insanely whack when just a fraction of my tracks run"
that alone is a more impressive lyric than anything the beastie boys ever wrote. i'm not knocking them as a group, cause they definitely entertain and they've had a bunch of tight albums... also i think they were actually nominated for the rock & roll hall of fame. but rap lyrics wise, get real. think of how many rappers themselves proclaim eminem as the greatest lyricist ever. seriously, it's not a legitimate comparison.
Truth^
I am neither foxy, nor a lady.
Neil Young - Kanye West - Beck - PJ Harvey - The Knife - Basement Jaxx - Tom Waits - Shpongle (Live) - Flying Lotus (Live) - The Avalanches - Autechre - Eels - Fat Freddy's Drop - Liquid Liquid - OFWGKTA - Freddie Gibbs - Big K.R.I.T. - Phantogram - Christian Scott - Nosaj Thing - Gold Panda - James Blake
For 2011
People seriously trying to talk about Beastie Boys lyrically? Half of their songs are about sandwiches and spelling out their name.
Namaste
Yeah, a butterfly floats on the breeze of a sun lit day
As I feel this reality gently fade away
Riding on a thought to see where it's from
Gliding through a memory of a time yet to come
Smoke paints the air
Swirling images through my mind
Like a whirlpool spin beginning to unwind
And I stand at the edge cautiously awaiting
As time slips by
Carefully navigating by the stars in the sky
And I sit
And I think to myself
And on the horizon, the sun light begins to climb
And it seems like it's been so long since he shined
But I'm sure it was only yesterday
A cold chill of fear cut through me
I felt my heart contract
To my mind I brought the image of light
And I expanded out of it
My fear was just a shadow
And then avoice spoke in my head
And she said dark is not the opposite of light
It's the absence of light
And I thought to myself
She knows what she's talking about
And for a moment I know
What it was all about
