I'm comparing because I think they have similar tones and intents, and the flaws I'm finding in Yeezus are things I found done really well on R.A.P. Music. And while that album got really strong reviews, they weren't the breathless "This changes everything" type stuff that this album is getting. Killer Mike and El-P made a challenging album full of less than friendly sounds that still managed to bang while providing insightful yet street accessible commentary on race, politics, and corporate culture. Kanye made a challenging album full of less than friendly sounds that still manages to bang while obsessing over himself while providing rather clumsy attempts at commenting on race, politics, and corporate culture.
I know, why harp on about something if I dislike it so much? Well, I don't hate it, I just find it a really frustrating failed experiment because there are flashes of greatness that I'm having trouble reconciling with the less inspiring parts. I guess a lot of people are as equally taken with the stuff that I think is fairly weak as I am with a couple of tracks.
