YACHT was amazing & made the show for me. Bogan Via were also surprisingly good. Enjoyed what we heard of Painted Palms but Jen didn't so we didn't stay for long. It was great to see how big the crowd was -- massive turnout for Murs/Blackalicious, and there really was a legitimate concern that they fit as many people as they possibly could inside the Crescent during YACHT. And I imagine the Cityscape stage was crazy packed, too, with the Neighbourhood & Pinback playing there. Hopefully this can become like San Diego Street Scene.

insbordnat, it occurred to me when I was logging the acts I saw in my spreadsheet that you were leaving immediately after YACHT. Per Ivy's Facebook posts, did Sir Mix-a-lot run late? Did you see any of Z-Trip's set or did you cut out before he took the stage?

Nope, we just left about 3/4 the way through Z-Trip's set. We were exhausted and that shit got old.

    Ah. So he was unimpressive?

Oh yeah, caught Gary Numan last night. It was all right. There were quite a few songs that I thought were pretty terrific ("Metal" among them, and the only one that I could identify by name), and they rocked a lot harder than I expected them to. He's a poofter, right? Not that that's either here or there, it's just an observation I had. The best part of the show was when I moved to the sound board near the end of the set and there was a gay couple, May-December romance, and December was dancing his ass off like he'd just taken Ecstasy and was reliving his 80s heyday. It was sweet and made me wish I could enjoy shows that uninhibitedly.

    What a fun weekend!

Hats off to Viva PHX. Got there at 7 just in time to see Gap Dream's set. They had about 20 people at their stage, only played a 30 minute set and then left to go play another gig in tempe. I was able to swing back by my car and slam a beer in between sets which was nice. Next was Bogan Via who were far better than expected and I can see them blowing up with the right amount of exposure. After that I went to see Murs but live hip hop without a backing band just doesn't do it for me. I ran into a couple friends who I never imagined I would see at a show which was nice. I went back inside to catch Painted Palms who were pretty good. Then I went back outside and met up with my friends for Blackalicious who was better than Murs but still didn't impress me. I went back inside again for Night Jewel, who was alright but I was mainly distracted by how she was the same height as me even though she was standing on a stage. Stayed inside to avoid all of the Sir-mix-a lot madness I figured was going on. My friend who was unable to attend because of work managed to get off at 10 after it had it sold out but he was able to find a girl who was leaving and she gave him her wristband. He literally made it in right as YACHT walked on stage. Yacht definitely played the best set of the night. They were the only band that left me wishing there were longer set times. We decided not to try and make it to Bar Smith for The Moving Units and we just watched Jerome lol who was meh. I was very impressed with the overall Viva PHX experience. It was easy to go from stage to stage without much hassle. It wasn't overcrowded at any of the sets I saw even though it had sold out. Can't wait to do it again, let's just hope they make it a quarterly thing and not yearly!

Saturday night I saw Gary Numan. He played a pretty awesome set where he would go back and forth between older and newer material. His set was overshadowed by the opener Big Black Delta who totally destroyed. Check this band out and keep an eye open, they are going to be doing big things soon!

Sunday I went to the Downtown Art Detour, it was arty!

oh, and at crescent i walked up to a tall guy and said "are you zack" and he said no lol.

LOL, glad you enjoyed the show

the portland cello project was fabulous. so glad i went. they had five cellists, a flutist, a trumpet player, a drummer, and either a guitar or bass player, from my seat it was hard to tell. they also had this vocalist who was really good, i believe it was patti king. her pronunciation lent it self well to radiohead. they didn't use her for every song, but most of the songs. she didn't sing paranoid android or electioneering from what i remember.

they played everything in order, minus fitter happier. i was wondering what they would do about that. instead they played "jigsaw falling into place" which worked perfectly for them. unfortunately right as they were starting climbing up the walls, a fire alarm went off and we all had to exit the building. in the parking lot four people had their cellos with them, so they played "take 5". when we went back inside, they played bach until everyone had gotten back in the theatre.

my favorites of the night were paranoid android, climbing up the walls, jigsaw, and lucky. paranoid was funny. like one of the band members said, you could tell who knew the album and who didn't by when they started clapping. the only song i was disappointed with was actually one of my favorites, let down. it just sounded kinda clunky and dumpy. i think let down is a great song because the lyrics are sad, but the music is really happy. that was lost in translation. the vocalist brought out an acoustic guitar for exit music. it was good, but the way she chose to change octaves didn't really work for me.

for the finale they played three songs. i can't remember what the first song was, zachattacks said it was 2+2=5. i recognized whatever they were playing, just couldn't quite place it. it was really good though, along with paper tiger by beck. i guess they do a whole beck album. finally they closed with take 5 again, only much more powerful this time. one of the cello players moved his hands so fast my mind was blown.

anyway, i highly recommend checking these guys out if you get the chance. it was a beautiful evening. thanks to zachattacks for joining me!

To actually be recognizable, I will wear a green JJ's cantina shirt. My other distinguishing characteristics: tall, white. I'm looking forward to this show. I'm digging Underneath the Rainbow. Crescent will be a good size for them. The Marquee seemed a little big.

How were Black Lips? Would've loved to have made it but work kept me out of town all week. Bet that was a better, more raucous venue for them than last year's Marquee appearance.

Bought a Cloud Nothings ticket today. Jurassic 5 show is the same night we'll be in Austin for Nick Cave. Hope that show is better than Janelle Monae for those of you going.

There is nothing like a Black Lips show. The crowd, the band, and the setlist were all awesome and the new stuff sounded great live. I have so much fun every time I see these guys live.
