    Default Bay Area shows 3/24 & 3/25

Any Bay Area denizens know of any concerts (or DJ performances) you would recommend in the general area on March 24th and 25th? Iíll be in your neck of the woods on business from AZ and would like to spend the evenings catching some music instead of hanging around the hotel or spending a minute more than I have to with my sales guys.

Not looking for anyone to do research for me, just if you know of any off the top of your head.

There's a couple good things going on those days:

3/24 - Tim Hecker & Oren Ambarchi @ The Independent, which is one of the city's nicest venues. If your'e unfamiliar, they're both experimental/avant-garde/ambient electronic producers so it's going to be a really lovely, let the music wash over you kind of evening.

    3/24 - of Montreal @ GAMH
    3/25 - of Montreal @ Slim's
    3/25 - Matthew E. White @ The Rickshaw Stop (indie/americana/singer songwriter)
3/25 - Moon Duo @ Bottom of the Hill (psych rock, project of one of the members in Wooden Shjips)

Also, Housepitality at f8 is your best bet if you're looking for a DJ set/dancing on a Wednesday night - I don't know who is playing that night but they've got great residents and it's great for underground house/techno.

    Thanks muchly, guedita.

Tim Hecker and Oren Ambarchi sound right up my alley, but I am unfamiliar with them, so I appreciate the recommendation. I’ll be sure to check them out (heard good things about the Independent, too; never been).

I really enjoyed the Rickshaw Stop on my last trip a few weeks back (first time there). Caught local artist Emily NeVeu and Deeradorian (right after catching her open for Zola Jesus week before in Phoenix) and Sea of Bees from Sacramento. They were all quite good, but Emily NeVeu in particular was standout. If you get a chance to catch her around town I highly recommend (you may know of her already, of course). Lush and romantic dream pop, something like Pure Bathing Culture. Very friendly and engaging vibe all around at the venue, too. Think I’ll go back on the 25th to check out Mathew E. White, appreciate the recommendation.

Got tix to catch Moon Duo in AZ the weekend before (always liked Wooden Shjips).

I’ll bring my wife along on some subsequent trip so we can check out Housepitality at f8 together. From your posts here I know you’re really up on good DJs and dance music of all (non cheesy-EDM) varieties, so I’m really looking forward to Housepitality.

Caught Echosmith at Life is Beautiful last year. Like a real-life Partridge Family band or something.

Actually, they were pretty good, especially considering some of them are barely out of HS, and some are still in.

Doctor P? Dubstep, right? Not a big fan of dubstep.

I do love Crystal Castles, though (I’m guessing you do, too). Really bummed Alice Glass left and broke them up. One of my very favorite bands of the past 10 years.

I see you’ll be at Purity Ring at the Fox in June – we’ll be there, too, rolling nicely. Guedita’s not a fan, but I love their first album (still “meh” on their sophomore effort, though; seems too “poppy” and mainstream, not nearly weird enough). Caught Purity Ring live 3 times so far (3 different venues, including Coachella in ’13) and they’ve gotten better each time. I wasn’t too hep on Zola Jesus’ latest recording, either, but live her performance of it was wonderful. I’m hoping Purity Ring’ll be the same.

Can we add April 14th and 15th to this? That, or direct me to a website that would have calendar events in the area.

Yeah, Sfweekly (I’m sure there are others).

The key words in my post were “recommend” and “off the top of your head”.

Appreciate the friendly interaction, though. That’s what this board is all about.

Creep, the Bay Bridged music calendar highlights some of the smaller/local stuff but its' not updated for April yet. Check the SF Chella festival thread, too, there's a lot of acts playing those two days.

Also 4/15 - Wand (psych, garage rock) at Bottom of the Hill, 4/15 - Eskmo (Ninja Tune, Warp) @ PW

    5/22: Move D, Reaganz, Sassmouth @ Monarch

Perhaps my sarcasm-detection meter was set on "extra-sensitive" and I mis-read.

If so, I humbly apologize, Mr. Creep, for being the unfriendly one.

There is always the List but they don't generally cover EDM unless it's in a huge venue.
03/13/15 Wolf Alice - the Rickshaw Stop
    04/24/15 Polaris - The Chapel
06/11/15 Neutral Milk Hotel - The Phoenix Theatre

I'll be up there March 20, 21, 22. Gonna try to score a ticket for George Clinton & Parliament at the Independent Sunday night.

dfh, I know you're likely missing out on Housepitality this Wednesday but I just wanted to say that DJ Minx is the headliner and she hails straight out of Detroit, runs Women on Wax Recordings, and is a real treat. She lays down deep, funky house music and has always been a stand out for me at the Made in Detroit stage for Movement. If you're just chilling in your hotel room that night, housepitality streams their events at http://housepitalitylive.com

Thanks for the link to Housepitality, guedita, I’ll be sure to check it out. Looking forward to catching them at f8 on a subsequent trip, too. I ended up bugging out early and catching a plane back to Phoenix Wednesday (last) evening.

And huge thanks for the Tim Hecker and Oren Ambarchi recommendation. Holy shit that was some excellent music! As you said, a lovely, let the music wash over you evening. Not really ambient, I don’t think – more like electronic (and some instrumental with Ambarchi) tone poems or something, in the way that, say, Richard Strauss did orchestral tone poems. However it’s categorized, great stuff.

The Independent’s a cool venue, and the crowd for this performance couldn’t have been better. 300 or so mostly-young people making a commensurate amount of noise before and between sets, but during both sets everyone was so enraptured that when the music would occasionally drop to a low volume you could hear a pin drop. No one yakking, at all, during the performance. Damn refreshing.

Reminds me of when getbetter and I saw Perfume Genius there. During some songs it was exactly that quiet, so quiet that the sounds of the bartenders making drinks was intrusive. Oh, and their drunk merch guy occasionally getting very excited as if he was their #1 fan.
