New material sounds pretty good live despite my initial reaction to the album.

    Metz - 8/15 - Red 7
    Belle & Sebastian - 8/28 - ACL Live
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - 9/14 - The Mohawk
    Chelsea Wolfe - 9/19 - The Mohawk
    Titus Andronicus - 9/20 - Red 7
Thee Oh Sees - 9/23 - Hotel Vegas

Pitchfork's review of Mess is just straight up dumb.

Throughout the review it seems like the reviewer genuinely enjoys most of the songs on the album and gives them props for moving forward with their experimentation with electronic music. Then he sums up the review by saying that Liars have traditionally been labeled an "unlistenable" band, which has made them an "easy band to admire" and concludes this album is a "centrist" album for Liars and that people will like this record simply because it is a Liars record. I can't… I don't even… Sometimes Pitchfork is just the worst.

Seven albums in, the respectable qualities of Liars’ music have been well-documented, but it’s worth asking: do they make moving, ingratiating music or simply admirable art? Does anything on Mess have the capacity to inspire emotional investment? Does any of it stick with you? Or, more importantly, where is the Liars-ness in Mess?

I thought Mess was a BNM for sure. It's their best work since their self-titled and possibly better.

I dig that Ian highlighted the drumming on the Cloud Nothing's record. Very well deserved! I'm so happy for this band.

Yup the new record is just stellar. Can't wait to hear them live...hoping for Outside Lands. Would be logical too, no West Coast dates yet

Pitchfork nailed the Mac Demarco album today. Excellent review by any standards and they tackle his appeal/ aesthetic quite well.

    8.5 and BNM. Well deserved.

Wow Pitchfork with a makeup score for their 7.6 for It's The Arps. Big fan of Todd Terje but didn't think It's Album Time was BNM.

Really odd to see a band (Plague Vendor) who's members I see working or hanging out around Uptown Whittier get reviewed by Pitchfork. With a decent score from Cohen no less.

Ian Cohen's Review of Coachella 2014

The festival admirably presents music-as-art to people who simply do not give a shit about music as art, and the tension can be fascinating.

Looks like they felt bad about giving the new album a 2.5, so they reviewed the Pixies entire back catalog, too. Very strange.

Weird review...no idea why but I immediately thought of this thread. Also weird that this review does not read anything like as high as the album scores are.
    Sleater-Kinney 5.1 // Desert Daze 5.2 // Speedy Ortiz 5.21 // Rocket From The Crypt 5.30 // Built to Spill 7.17 // Wilco 8.5 // FYF 8.22 // St. Vincent 8.30 // AC/DC 9.28 // My Morning Jacket 10.11/ + 10.13 // Father John Misty 10.16

Is there a particular reason as to why the entire Pixies catalogue was reviewed? I mean, there's no reissues, right? If you wanna shit on Indie Cindy, fine, but why drive home the fall from grace so harshly?

In the review of the Darkside album "Psychic":

"Upon initially hearing it, one could easily think of Daftside as an academic work rather than something meant for listening pleasure—a foment of the bubbling resentment towards the original’s Gatsby-esque confluence of ostentatious extravagance and genuine, if self-serving, benevolence; it was a hell of a party that left a lot of up-and-coming producers feeling like they were locked out of East Egg."

Can we just stop Ian Cohen from reviewing albums ever again? I've only listened to the Fucked Up album once and 7.0 seemed like my initial gut feeling (good but not great,) but the vast majority of his review is focused on why the production is bad, even if the songs are very good. Jesus.

7.0 is bullshit. This album is far better than David Comes To Life.

First listen to a stream isn't really a good way to judge, especially for a band that uses so much layering in their recordings. That said, my first listen was kind of disappointing, as it seemed like they've moved even further away from using the explosiveness of hardcore in non-hardcore settings. There were some songs that floored me, but most of it seemed too something I can't quite put my finger on. I'll give it plenty more chances, that's for sure.

If you wade through the crap and dig deeper, you can discover some interesting albums and tracks that are reviewed by people like Marc Masters. But their more prominent reviews and this top 100 stuff are just awful and embarrassing.

When it comes to Ian Cohen, the general rule is that as the better the album the worse the score and the more mind-numbing the commentary.
