It seems like their main gripe with the record was that other people were comparing to Radiohead..

Alt-J have also been compared to Wild Beasts, and while there's a superficial similarity between both bands' oddly voiced singers, when Wild Beasts hold back-- as they did on the majestic Smother-- it's because they know that priapism would be inappropriate at that particular moment.
I have not heard Alt-J, and I like Wild Beasts, but I want to punch the reviewer in the face for writing that sentence. Priapism? jesus.

And doesn't it not matter whether or not a priapism would be appropriate, seeing as how you don't have control over priapic qualities?

I understand not giving it a high 8-10 range since they are critiquing the album for not being groundbreaking but 7.5 is a bit low for that being the main issue if they still like the album.
I found it peculiar as well when they accuse Beach House's Bloom of the same flaw, but still award it a 9+. It's like everyone was expecting a predictable jack fest for Coexist so they went all contrarian in the score.

Sorry for the late "lurker" reply, but I just wanted to mention that.

Any misgivings about the writing for that Alt-J review are forgiven with the last line, which I feel so fucking frequently about hype bands:

But if this is what's getting tagged as an "innovative" success these days, then heaven help the weirdos.

I think their guide to upcoming releases would be a lot more interesting if it identified which of them had leaked already.

Stuff I've been meh on the more I listen: Nas, Dirty Projectors, Beach House. Stuff I've outrightly did not like: Metric, Silversun Pickups, Mountain Goats, M. Ward, The Walkmen, fun, of monsters and men, Deerhoof, Yeasayer.

There's plenty of shit I don't like. I listen to a stupid amount of music, obviously there is plenty I don't like.

Cohen nailed the new Muse review. Full of lulz

    http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/17281-the-2nd-law/

He's soon surrounded by a mock Greek chorus, hamming with operatic haughtiness, "I'll light the fuse, and I'll never lose." And you cross your fingers, sincerely hoping, "please Lord, make him rhyme it with Muse."

Oh my god that Muse review is fucking hilarious. Spot on. A 5.5 is still a little generous though.

    9.0 for the Aussies.

Tickets for both LA shows start at around $100 on StubHub. This won't make getting an affordable one any easier.
    5/15 - Muse - Mayan
    5/23 - Ceremony - Echoplex (?)
    5/26 - Refused - Roxy
    5/27 - Neutral Milk Hotel - Warner Grand (?)
    5/30 - Spoon - Wiltern (?)

The new Tame Impala is not worthy of that score...or all the hype. It's a clear step down from their debut. Not even close to how good that is. What's wrong with you people?!

I've come to the same conclusion after several listens. I mean, it's really good...but for the most part is missing that wonderful stoney haze that the first album did so well. This one is very poppy, it sounds very influenced by Todd Rundgren's Something/Anything?. Mind Mischief and Apocalypse Dreams are my current faves, but nothing on this album comes anywhere near matching the greatness of those first two songs on their debut.

I think Lonerism is the better album. I'm going to give the first one another spin though. Been a bit.

    Courtney Barnett - 6/5 - The Mohawk
The Avett Brothers/Old Crow Medicine Show - 6/27 - Whitewater Amphitheater
    Death Grips - 7/18 - The Mohawk
    Kraftwerk - 9/25 - Bass Concert Hall

for starters I can't stand the absurdity of that first track (didn't like it live either). it's all of the quibbles I'd had with the band here and there in the past wrapped up in a single song. so much silly melodrama. the shorter tracks are solid though.

I like the album, but still don't think the first 10 minutes of that track are very worthwhile.
