I fucking hate that review too. I've read it every time someone brings this up and loathe it more and more. Even when he it talking about the positives (or what he enjoys of his career, he talks down to him).

And The Fragile review always confused me too. Why review it and pass judgment on anything at 3am? Unless thats just a device to tell his shitty story.

Some of the many reasons I dont read or care for pitchfork. I still don't believe that the numbered score is an average of the editors, either.

Looking back I think that of both bands, I attribute that to me being both older and jaded towards their more often than not idiot fans.

I've actually never listened to Ram. Ive made it all the way through Dark Horse and Lennon's covers album, but somehow missed this one. Probably skipped it because of the goofy cover/title and Linda co-credit, or something, and then never came back around.

I think he is talking about the often childish lyrics rather than the music. At least I hope, cuz the music holds up amazingly well in my eyes.

I'm not a big fan of Trent's programming or voice or just his pop sense in general. I'm not hating on him for making pop industrial, I just don't dig his sound. It's got this beefy early 90s aggro alt rock thing going on that doesn't do a lot for me, and his slower songs seem kind of maudlin in a way. And yeah, the lyrics are a major demerit. Although I think the one song I actually sort of like is his biggest hit.

Lets talk about what pitchfork reviewed in 1999 and 2001 (nin and tool, respectively) because they're the same entity now as they were back then. They gave Source Codes and Tags a 10 in that era. A fucking 10.

I'd give it the nod over This is Happening, yes. But the other two? Not even close.

How about any of animal collective albums they reviewed. My point is, early pitchfork reviews can't be compared to their reviews now. The Internet was a different worlds back then.

I love Beck, but I'm not crazy about that album like most people are. It's good, but it's not 5-star classic (like Rolling Stone gave it). I'll take Odelay or Mutations over it any day.
We're here to play some Mississippi Delta Blues. We're in a horrible depression, and I gotta admit - we're starting to like it.

I'm curious about it now, I do enjoy "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsley".

I love Ram. I like it more than Plastic Ono Band, but not more than All Things Must Pass. Coincidentally, it was the first used record I bought after acquiring a turntable.

I likewise prefer it to Plastic Ono Band, but I'd say it's my favorite post-Beatles record.

Well, I guess I have to pick this up today, now. This discussion seems to be blowing up two of my long-held assertions. 1) That All Things Must Pass is the best post-Beatles solo record, and 2) that Tusk is the great unheralded proto indie pop record.

All Things Must Pass is bloated, but the musicianship is retardedly good. The songs themselves are good enough, but he was backed by Delaney & Bonnie's band and those players really elevate the record in a way George could never do himself. It would be far & away my favorite post-Beatles record if he had been able to trim the fat. As such, it and Ram remain neck & neck.

EDIT: Tusk is a fucking weird masterpiece.

This discussion inspired me to dust-off McCartney and it's a lot better than I remember it being. Currently on my third listen and I keep hearing new things layered into the mix.

Yeah, I did that not too long ago and was surprised by how good it really is. I mean, everything else is overshadowed by Maybe I'm Amazed, but that was going to happen on any album he included that song on.

Plastic Ono Band is easily my favorite post-Beatles album. No contest. I love Ram and all, but I can't think of a better collection of emotionally raw songs post-Beatles or otherwise.

"Too Many People" was the highlight of seeing McCartney the first time. It's odd not having Ram in my collection.

Also, when my friends who like music (but aren't nerdy about it) ask me what I consider the greatest album ever to be, my answer is All Things Must Pass.

Well, can we all agree at least that it goes like this for best Post-Beatles, by Beatle:

Harrison - All Things Must Pass
    Lennon - Plastic Ono Band
    McCartney - Ram
    Ringo - ???

    And Ringo's best is Ringo.
