The latter is more what I'm getting at. NWOBHM is fucking rad, but a lot of newer power metal takes itself way too seriously.

15 years is a long time between albums. I haven't heard anything sleep has put out yet, but if memory recalls, aren't they a stoner metal band? I may have to check out their last album.

if you haven't listened to Dawnbringer I would suggest checking them out. A lot of NWOBHM riffing with some black metal influences thrown in and none of the cheese that can make the whole thing go terribly wrong. Either of the last two records would be a great place to start.

I thought Dawnbringer was fairly cheesy but I still found it enjoyable enough to buy one of their records.

Not sure whether to put this here or in the Damaged thread but did anyone like Cave In back in the day? Listened to a couple old shows recently uploaded from about 11-12 years ago. I saw them once at the El Rey. Never a huge fan but good stuff.

Also, I am listening to the new Iced Earth album right now (which features guest vocals from Blind Guardian's Hansi!!!) and it's making me very nostalgic.

Metalsucks just did a pretty good interview with Persekutor. After reading it it checked out the new EP, "Power Frost" and am in love. This is some of the grooviest, raw, lo fi black metal I have ever heard. It's on spotify if you want to check it out and is only 2 songs.

Great interview with Jeff Walker of Carcass over at Noisey today, discussing the band's return.

So, unlike Lemmy and Gene Simmons, you were never in it for the pussy?
"Nah. What kind of idiot would form a death metal band thinking there’s pussy, as you put it, in it."

is thrones any good? worth catching live?

I know next to nothing about metal or instrumental noise stuff but a new party in sf (looks to be exploring power electronics, noise and loosely affiliated strains of "dance" music) has him headlining their next show. Coming to this in a roundabout fashion as an avid consumer of sludgy, noisy industrial techno but I'm eager to check it out.

These are more stoner/sludge and less doom but I would add these:

    Melvins - Bullhead
Boris - Heavy Rocks (the 2002 album)

Did some metal listening. Made it through Chaos A.D. for the first time and enjoyed it pretty well, like the kind of tribal drumming forays they'd go into. "The Hunt" is fucking great. Then St. Vitus - Born Too Late, which I was a little familiar with thanks to "Black Windowpane" being on that Pitchfork 500 list and being such a jam. It's a bit exhausting over an entire album, but it's still some sludgey goodness. Gave Abigail Williams - Becoming a spin while driving to work tonight since they're playing here soon (not that it matters, I have no money for anything), pretty good shit overall, avoided a lot of the metal cliches that drive me crazy. Can't say the same about Opeth - Blackwater Park. I keep trying to give that one a chance, and I keep thinking I'm getting into it when it starts rocking, but then it just goes into sensitive epic man emotions mode for half an hour and I'm done. Can we do something about metal bands getting ahold of acoustic guitars? And let them know that "cookie monster vocals" aren't really a put down, especially when your other mode is whiny Nickelback crooning? Still, the good outweighed the bad on this round.

Opeth has always been a difficult one for me, for that very reason. When they're on, they are a fantastic band, but they get so far up their own asses in between the moments of greatness.

The show was great last night! I have a new favorite SF metal ensemble---Grayceon. Chick vocalist, playing an electric cello(didn't know this existed) and they fuckin rocked! they had some harmonious break downs, think Baroness. And the bitch could wail! Very good. Great pit for Black Cobra too, way to grow some balls SF.

I stayed for about 2.5 songs of Weedeater and left. Sludgy doom is just not for me. I've tried time and time again, just wasn't feeling it. Plus I got the wind knocked outta me and broke a toe nail during Black Cobra. Thee Parkside has done it again! Bringing that Basement-esque setting that I crave.
