So they're FINALLY on tour again, and since I've never seen them live I'd love to go. However, tickets are a little pricey.. so I'm doing a little research on them first. I've heard everything about their live performances, from them being amazing to downright terrible. Can anyone who's seen them live tell me if they're any good?

I saw them at the first Treasure Island Festival and then with REM. Their TI Fest performance was much better, but they were in no way bad at REMs show.

Check out their earliest work if you want to hear some good music.

Lonesome crowded west is one of my favorite albums of theirs.

Lonesome Crowded West is one of the best albums of all time.

I saw them in 05 and they were incredible. I saw them at Sasquatch 08 and they were still pretty dam good. One of the best sets of the fest.

I've seen them 3 times, and in the three times they went from Astounding, phenomenally good, to absolutely boring and uninterested to very focused and interesting. They're the definition of hit or miss.

i went to an Acoustic Christmas a couple of years ago they played at and they were terrible. It felt like they didn't want to be there. i guess some responses might be along the lines of "Could you blame them?" Don't take the gig if you don't want to play it.

Sometimes your management sets up a gig that you really have no control over and well... money is money. You really gonna say that? If I got a gig I didn't want to play at I'd just have some artistic outburst about the way I feel about it. But jokes on them if I get paid for it.

And the joke's on the fans in the crowd who wanted to see them. Not cool.

If it were me i'd do something that expressed my dissatisfaction in being there without upsetting the performance for the fans.

But i'd still play the gig if it were paying and was already laid out weeks in advance. That's just rude to not go. I would never play the Grammy's though (speaking hypothetically).

i think they are getting better. i saw them for the first time in 03 and it was amazing. every show after that i saw was horrible, until the most recent show i caught at sasquatch. they played a few songs off of lonesome crowded west that i'd never seen them play before. and isaac seemed halfway sober. so that was nice. i will be attending the mississippi show of this tour. hopefully they can keep it up.

Saw them twice, first time was awful. Isaac was mad at something and gave such a limp performance. Then saw them last summer and they were INCREDIBLE. I mean it, absolutely incredible. So much energy, it even seemed like Isaac was having...*gulp* FUN. He even apologized for the shitty performances he's given Miami. Thats pretty awesome

The first time I saw them Isaac was incredibly angry, and it made the show great. The second time, he was incredibly angry, and it became a sort of pathos where he seemed to want to be bad to piss the crowd off.

I'm surprised there hasn't been an active MM thread lately with the upcoming album and a bunch of songs being released one-by-one over the last couple of months. I'm digging all of the new tracks.

Strangers to Ourselves is out March 17.

My order of the 5 songs so far released (I am not going to judge the others based on live versions):

    The Ground Walks
    The Best Room
    Lampshades on Fire
    Coyotes
    Of Course We Know
Hunting has been part of our society since the first Europeans came over and shot buffalo and Native Americans and whatnot.

So nobody else besides heart cooks brain is going to mention the completely bizarre experience that is Pistol (A. Cunanan, Miami, FL. 1996)?
