It has been changed over time. During the dark ages, money was considered evil. Making a profit was a ticket straight to hell. This caused the Merchant class to almost die out. Except in port towns, but they lived in a city and were already going to hell. Funny thing is that during this time is when the Catholic Church built up alot of their wealth. Eventually England told the pope to go fuck him self and people could make money again.
