I just got an out of the blue call from someone who found a 2 year old resume online somewhere and they want me to come in for an interview. It's for a company that has actual benefits and retirement plans, and they are paying more than what I make at this shit hole. Send good vibes my way!!!!

I am still at work so that might be weird. I felt weird enough scheduling the interview while at work.

As soon as I got off the phone though my boss informed me he is still thinking about the raise I asked for... You might be a little late buddy!

I hate when employment agencies pass themselves off as real companies. I went into the interview thinking I was going to meet the actual GC and it was just a head hunter. But she acted like she had a good relationship with the client, it's a company I have heard a lot about and it's actually female owned, which is very rare in the construction industry. There are a lot of projects (military, public type work) that if a company goes in as either female or minority owned they get preferential treatment. So this company has been very active even in this construction lull we have had with the bad economy. I have all of the background they are looking for but I still have to meet with them sometime next week. So fingers are still crossed, they have an amazing benefit package.

Having spent years working for agencies it surprises me she wasn't more clear with you up front - Hmmm. However if the client sounds interesting to you hopefully you'll get the chance to talk with them directly! Good luck!

I don't know if this is normal in other states but I have run into this a lot in AZ. It can be very frustrating. At least it's a direct placement and not a temp to perm type thing.

    A combination of factors:

    1) I have held at least 2 and more often 3 jobs concurrently for 8 out of the past 10 years.
    2) If I get into a top 5 school with no funding and a top 25 school with a full-ride merit-based scholarship, I'll always choose the top 25 school.
    3) For grad school, there is the option of working your way through by serving as a Teaching Assistant. Most schools will cover your tuition if you're offered a TA spot.
    4) I am lucky enough to have a family that can help me out financially if I ask. But I try not to ask.

Second question: how do you reconcile the guilt from going to school for 50 years instead of actually contribution to society?

So I was about to get out of my car and deposit a check I got yesterday (which I was thrilled to receive), it was a progress payment for a job I'm currently working on. I turn my car off and my phone chimes, letting me know I have an email. I grab my phone and open up my email and i see it is a message from the company I have been hoping to be employed by for several months now. A few weeks ago they said they will be posting a position online that they think i would be great for, and that they want me to apply when it comes up. It hadn't come up in the time they said it would. When I saw this email I figured it was letting me know things had changed, I wasn't very thrilled to see the name. Upon opening this email, I read that the position is in fact open, but for some reason it wasn't posted online. I proceeded reading and found that I was being asked to send my resume via email and if Monday would be a good day for me to be interviewed.

Needless to say, I am thrilled! Hopefully, come Monday late morning, I'll have much less reason to be in this line.

Even though I've essentially been self employed for the last three years and had a decent income(come September), it hasn't been that wonderful a time, especially considering it was a forced venture due to being laid-off. But alas, good news has arrived for me. I stand in this line no more. In my departure, I wish all of you the best of luck.

Anyone else in California currently eligible for unemployment benefits? Did you face serious delays in getting your claim processed? I have read about the backlog of unpaid unemployment claims in 2013 that were due to some massive budget cuts which greatly reduced staffing at EDD. They're so understaffed that although they technically have a phone line open 8am-12noon, I have never once gotten through after dozens of tries - even putting my phone on auto redial for four hours straight. However, the impression I had was that these issues were resolved by early 2014.

I filed an unemployment claim in early November. A few days later I got a "Notice of Unemployment Award" which tells you how much you will yield from your claim. Then silence. Not another piece of mail, email or phone call. In mid December, after trying to get through to a live operator on the phone line for more than a week, I tried out their email option and, surprisingly, received an email response just 48 hours later. Unfortunately, EDD responded by telling me that because it had been more than 30 days since I initially filed my claim, I would need to reopen it. Which I did that very day. Now, another 30 days has gone by without a peep. I'm guessing they're going to tell me that, again, I'm going to have to refile/re-open my claim because it's been more than 30 days. Any other Californians experienced this lately? Did you find a solution or did you just have to continually refile/re-open your claim until you finally received your first continued claim form?

My brother did a bunch of internet searches and he found a phone number that linked him directly to the claims office. When he called there they got extremely angry and confused, but he was able to get his funds released.

Is there an office you can go to? It's usually a long wait here in Arizona, but it gets handled in one visit.

loca - I don't believe so. They have these locally run "job centers" across the state that seem designed to help community college graduates find jobs and training. Unemployment claims appear to be handled only online/via phone/mail.

Bmack - if your brother still has that number handy, feel free to PM me. Cheers!

I'm starting to wonder if EDD just makes this purposefully frustrating so people give up and abandon their claims. To recap, the steps you're supposed to follow:

    1. File claim
    2. Register for Cal-Jobs and upload your resume
    3. Receive Notice of Unemployment Award (amount that EDD will pay out)
    4. Receive first Continued Claim Form
    5. Mail back first Continued Claim Form to EDD
    6. Moving forward, use their Web-Certify system to continue your claim every 2 wks

Problem is, they never sent me my first continued claim form. Yesterday, they just responded to my third email complaint/inquiry by saying their records indicate I filed and reopened my claim twice, but that they never received my first Continued Claim Form back from me. (!!!!!!). Which, of course, I can't send them if I never get it from them in the first place. Total fucking insanity.

Oh, and, thanks to the person who PMd me suggesting trying the Vietnamese language option on the phone line to get through and then saying I hit the wrong button and asking for help in English. Looks like they've caught on to that one and have disabled that option. They remain impossible to reach via phone and do not take any office visit appointments. Anyway. Enjoy your economic recovery, everyone.

I filed for short term disability at the beginning of the month and it took about 3 weeks to finally get a notice that they paid some money, the problem is that I have not gotten my debit card in the mail. I'm already back at work and had some money to make it without income for about a month but yeah, it was a pain in the ass.

As someone who has dealt with EDD in the past you honestly have to call as soon as the office opens in the morning. I would still expect to be on hold for a bit but it's still way better then that annoying to busy to even be put on hold recording.

That might have been the case in the past, Unit, but now they do not answer the phone at all at the main 800 #. I have spent, quite literally, hours calling non-stop from 7:55am (five mins before they open) to 12noon (the time they close) on multiple days without ever getting through. I'm calling Sacramento HQ tomorrow to see if I can reach a live person.
