I just saw them in the park last night. Weird setting since there were a ton of yuppies and bros getting drunk all over the place, but they were fantastic. It was gorgeous laying in the grass, looking up at the Chicago skyline, and listening to them.

I'm really hoping I can get to their gig here in September...I'm having a bit of a renewed interested in them, and I've never seen them.

They've been playing pretty much the same setlist with a slight few variations, which you can find on setlist.fm. I was hoping to hear more off Things We Lost In The Fire, since that's the one I'm most familiar with, but really everything sounded wonderful. Definitely got a little sleepy at times, which is to be expected given their material, but it was more comfortable sleepy than boring sleepy. They can rock it out a little when they want to as well.

i stumbled upon this looking at sparklehorse videos. it's a nice little documentary released before Good Morning Spider, talks about his near death, thoughts on music, life in the country, and some of his insights about life that you'd expect from a great artist. worth a watch if you're a fan. this is part 1 of 6. 50 mins long.

My apologies if this has been covered already, but what the fuck is this shit??

In one of the stranger announcements of the year, independent rock icon Lou Reed and metal gods Metallica are apparently teaming up for a new album this fall. The songs will be written by Reed and arranged and performed by Metallica, and according to a recent interview with Rolling Stone, “the effort is a combination Reed’s Berlin and Metallica’s Master of Puppets.” Sound confusing enough yet? What if I told you the songs were written for the German play Lulu, a story adapted from author Frank Wedekind’s work? And how does Reed feel about the project? “It’s maybe the best thing done by anyone, ever.” Good one Lou, a real knee slapper. “I’m not joking,” Reed clarified in an interview with Vulture, “and I’m not being egotistical.” Well I guess we have our album of the century. Don’t let us down Lou, it’s not like you’ve set the bar high or anything.

Yeah, some friends and I were discussing that a couple of weeks ago. Weird.

Paulb will have to let us know how it turns out.

Based on Pitchfork's review a few weeks ago, I checked out Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs. It is really good! The songs are beautiful.
We're here to play some Mississippi Delta Blues. We're in a horrible depression, and I gotta admit - we're starting to like it.

I've been listening to the first Modern Lovers album, and I think the only thing I've heard that can really be placed in the same category is the first Violent Femmes album. Those records share a weird sort of bond.

I don't know if it's just me, but I've always compared the Modern Lovers to the Doors. Not really sure why though.

I can see it, as they totally have the keyboard and droning guitar thing going on. However, I see the Violent Femmes as having been very influenced by the overtly adolescent-sounding music and the pretty primal nature of the actual songs.

Oh yeah I totally agree with that. I was just bringing up something else I'd thought about regarding the band. But yeah, I totally see the comparison and the angsty "I'm in love I think but I don't know what to do with this" sort of energy thing.

Bored at work tonight somebody decided to have a contest to see who could name the most ghetto song with the definition intentionally left vague.

    I chose N.W.A. - Fuck tha Police.
I was proud of my answer and I personally think I win.

Also, nothing any of them did later ever compared (well, besides Talking Heads, but that's a whole different thing).

For some reason, I want to throw the first Feelies album in here too, but that's a bit more complex (just a bit).

Yeah, the Feelies first album just feels a little too taut and nervous for me. Like, those are kids that program computers or get in fights, vs the Modern Lovers kids who just run to the bathroom to jack it every 10 minutes.

So I just read this review likening Mastodon's progression to Metallica's, and once I thought about it, it's kind of eerie. They both had the raw first album that some people loved but that was a bit too primal, a second album that is incredible and really kicks up the music in every way possible, a third that takes the formula from the last one and ups the technical aspects and then a fourth that is much more technical, lengthy and obscure. What's Mastodon's Black Album going to be like?

So..... Who do you all think is most respected in the EDM industry for their originals and dj sets? im not talking live EDM performances or performers (DP, Plasktikman, Empire of the Sun, Chem Bros etc), but just straight up from producing and putting on a hell of a dj set.

I'd have to say wolfgang gartner or Sasha.
Sasha has obviously been around longer but damn he has not lost any touch.
Wolfgang throws down hard everytime and it seems like each new track he makes is a banger

but i want to hear what you all think...

Well, we'll find out very soon, should be a new album in the fall, if I recall correctly. I have high hopes.
