Was debating on wether or not I should make a thread about this. Figured there might already be one or that this might be the place for the questions.

    1) How do you all listen to music? (through the ears, duh) I recently got a trial for Spotify and love pretty much everything about it, I know I'm a bit late to the party. Pandora and most of my iTunes are now obsolete. I'll definitely be paying for it once the trial is up unless you all suggest something better.

    2) How do you guys discover new music? Many people here know bands I'd never heard of before. My "musical expertise" is in 90's-present hip-hop, but I'd consider myself as having decent general knowledge of most genres. Do you all frequent certain blogs? Do friends put you on to bands?

I use iTunes as I am a big fan of smart playlists. I use spotify to check new stuff out and it ends up as a repository for stuff not worth adding to my library.

I discover new stuff here mainly. And I like Stereogum.

Absolutely. Fucking. Incredible. I've listened to tons of Fugazi, but had only heard a Minor Threat song here and there. Personally, I'd rank it higher than any single Fugazi work, and up there alongside Husker Du and Minutemen's best work.
What the fucking fuck? Where have you been? What were your teenage years like? I absolutely CANNOT picture high school without this album on constant repeat.

That said, for sheer artistry The Argument is the better album, although pound for pound Minor Threat had a better track record. It's kind of easy to do that when you only record a total of 26 tracks, but the glory of their work and the level of development they experienced in a relatively short amount of time is incredible. Going from the first EP to the final single they sound like a completely different band.

    Here Comes the Argument......

That's pretty cool to admitting that you haven't listen a handful of what a lot of people are shocked at. I was thinking about this today and I probably haven't ever listen to a Led Zepplin album that wasn't a best of and lot of Classic rock in general.

    Polyrock - Polyrock
Pylon - Gyrate Plus and Park More
The Waitresses - Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful?
Au Pairs - Playing with a Different Sex
    Maximum Joy - Unlimited (1979-83)
    Indoor Life - Indoor Life
    Delta 5 - Singles & Sessions 1979-81
The Virgin Prunes - If I Die, I Die

Any other artists/albums you all can recommend?
You might have heard some of these before but...

    Kleenex - Liliput
    The Pop Group - Y

These two I have heard as well and they are both excellent albums; it's funny because when I stumbled upon Maximum Joy I found out a couple members of The Pop Group are in that band too. I have. It heard of the middle one though so I'll be sure to check it out.

That's so awesome you got to see them! Ha, I've never thought of that but that's totally on point.

See, I've never listened to Maximum Joy! Need to check them out. That middle band is the most insane all-girl band ever. They have it on Spotify if you use that it's so rad. Patrick actually turned me onto them from the wonderful "50 overlooked albums" thread. I think a lot of those albums he talked about were post-punk, so that's another good place to look.

That Pop Group set was punishingly loud at times too. Really grateful I got to catch them. I've done a little digging into Mark Stewart's solo work and there's a lot of quality there too.

Speaking of solo work of post punk luminaries, Colin Newman of Wire has at least two really great solo albums, A-Z and Commercial Suicide. The former I've known for years but the latter I've just gotten into recently.

Speaking of which, a few weeks ago I stumbled upon the most amazing gem. Rowland S. Howard, whom I of course loved his work in the Birthday Party and These Immortal Souls... released two solo albums when he was alive. Now I had no idea he did. I listened to the first one Teenage Snuff Film and was seriously in awe. It's a dark masterpiece, and why no one seems to know about it (even Nick Cave admirers) is beyond me. From the first guitar strums and vocals of Dead Radio ("you're bad for me like cigarettes, but I haven't sucked enough of you yet") to the pounding, distortion-heavy closer Sleep Alone. So if any of you haven't heard that, do it NOW.

A-Z has a little bit of notability for spawning one of the songs in The Silence Of The Lambs, only a cover by This Mortal Coil was the version in the movie.

    Plus this insane music video:

Yeah, this has been on my radar for awhile, I finally gave it a listen about 3 months ago and enjoyed it immensely in parts, but it seemed a little uneven. FACT put it in their top 10 albums of the 90s I think. I need to spend more time with it.

The only flaw I could say about the album is a few songs drag on a little too long. Other than that though, I think it's pretty damn perfect. I wish he was still alive and had the opportunity to record more stuff! I've heard great things about their lists... I think Chris made a playlist of that particular one on Spotify. I'll check it out.

Also I didn't know about Last.fm's Playground. Some of it is VIP (?) only but there are some cool tools such as the Scrobbling Timeline and Gender Plot.

What's the largest amount of steps you've had between artists? My first one was from Fats Domino to At the Gates: 11 steps.

Nashville Pussy to the Prayer Chain is 29 steps. That's near the most they've seen of 35!

I keep seeing Steve McDonald from Redd Kross.

Also I tend to get rid of the connections that are "____ dated _____" because that seems like cheating.
